I think that popular replacement rumors are the current assistant AG, I think his name is Larry Thompson. He's black, making him an opportunity for a high profile minority appointment.
Another rumor is Rudy Guiliani
Steve
Guiliani said he is in no way interestedQuote:

Jesus was cool dude, those religious fucks just twisted everything to suit their needs
Jesus was a liberal! He held disdain for the organized church of his time, taught kindness and acceptance, and worked with the poor and needy.
Another guy rumored is Marc Racicot who was governor of Montana. None of the guys on the list so far are anything near the right-wing wacko that Ashcroft is.
This is very good news--I can't imagine anybody being worse for legal adult entertainment than Ashcroft, so the replacement MUST be better. We could be back at 2003 with the 2257 rules also, which would be fabulous.
WOOHOO!
Jim
Ashcroft was TOO conservative...He got fired!!
Now that Bush thinks he has God AND the Stupid American people on his side just WAIT until you see who gets the job!!
Watch your ass EVERYONE!!
Good stuff although im worried about who will fill his shoes so to speak now :(
Regards,
Lee
and his replacement is...
this guy

the first latin person to hold a cabinet office, which is cool. also i gather he's a BIG supporter of large corporations, which is not.
Yeah that's an interesting surprise. Alberto Gonzales is very different from Ashcroft entirely. I've actually met him, which gives me a chuckle.
Gonzales is from West Texas, and he has a number of gay friends, some go back to growing up in San Angelo. He may be religious, like a hispanic Catholic, but he not at all of the born-again variety like Ashcroft.
When he was on the Texas Supreme Court he was pretty balanced judicially. I guess you could characterize it as center-right. (Bush appointed him to the TX SC while Governor)
In fact he was in a judicial majority that struck down the state's parental notification law, which I'm sure the religious right will never ever forget.
I think he was a lawyer at Akin Gump or maybe Vinson Elkins before that in Houston. Still I think being an Attorney General is a thankless job for anyone. So many federal laws are controversial and capricious, that you are going to make enemies all the time. I have no idea if he would either 1) enfore internet porn law or 2) go on a vandetta. (i guess whatever it is depends on your perspective) Actually most people thought Alberto Gonzales would be Bush's first Supreme Court appointment.
A lot of Supreme Court justices have historically garnered AG experience beforehand, so maybe he'll do this for awhile until a vacancy appears.
