How do you end your emails?

Greetings!

Here in Thailand we have the wai, a very charming way to greet. But for foreigners it can be very complex to figure out when, how and whom to wai. After many years I still make mistakes. Should I, should I not? How high should my hands go? You all have to decide it in a split second.

Now you wonder how this relates to emails? English is an easy language to learn, they say. True. But the English sign off in email is even more difficult to learn than a wai, for us, non-native speakers.

I am Dutch and today a Thai friend called to ask how to end his emails. Should it be "Thanks", or "Best" or "Cheers" or "Sincerely" etc. It is worse than figuring out how high your hands should go. I could only tell him I usually use what the person on the other side uses.

What do you usually do?

Honestly it depends on the situation.

Best is usually a short for Best regards, or Best of luck. so it depends on the content of the mail

You can always just put. Thank you for your time. or Thank you for your assistance.

But always put your name or nic under that.

I use Cheers, but I think that's an Aussie thing as we always say that to each other when leaving. I know a lot of N.Americans tend to say Thank You, which is nice as it works well in pretty much every situation, formal or casual.

Instead of copying the originating greeting, I would just chose one that suits your personality and stick with it, even if it is in a different language. I know Hawaiians that use Ma-halo, and Spaniards that use Hasta Luego. So why not use Wai if you are Thai? It personalises your greeting nicely!

Regards or Best regards... and your name. Sometimes i also put Have a nice day!:)

I use "Take Care", unless "Thanks" is appropriate, then I use that.

I am mostly using "take care", except when it's a more formal message... then I am using "best regards"

Luke, I use a version of the wai in Skype, if you can call the japanese bow a close substitute. :-)

at other times.... nothing.

luke is probably going to shoot me but i hate emails ending in 'cheers' (it may be aussie but i've seen it from the british)...

but that's just my own personal beef.

Well... Not all the times. It really depends on the context of the email.
