From online casinos to affiliate networks and pretty much everything that webmasters can sell in-between, one thing is always given to webmasters to promote the products and services they use on their sites, Banners, Buttons and, FPA's (Full Page Ads) however, when it comes to choosing the promotional materials we use on our sites apart from the 'look' of the promo material themselves what else should we pay attention to? For instance, when was the last time you actually looked at the site you have just built and wondered what other sizes of buttons or banners would work on the pages?

Banners And Buttons - Different Sizes.

As we all know banners and buttons come in a range of shapes and, sizes and, the reason for this is not only to make the promotional material stand out to the surfer hitting our sites but, to also ensure that when we use such promotional aids we choose the right size, look and, feel for our sites.

Lets take a look at some of the most popular banner and button sizes currently in use on the web today.

468x60 - This banner size is pretty much one of the 'standards' on the web, seen everywhere from Hotmail to XXX Sites.

480x80 - As with the 468x60 banner this is as popular across the web again seen on virtually any site you come across being used to sell everything from fridge freezers to magazine subscriptions.

120x60 - The smaller of the 'standard' banner sizes again as with the previous two sizes of promo materials the 120x60 button is used everywhere.

88x32 - Not as popular as the 120x60 button but still in widespread use across a wide range of affiliate programs and message forums.

Now that we have the main four types of banner and buttons figured out we need to figure out the best places on our websites to use them for maximum effect on our surfers for example, on a gallery page, the chances are you wouldn't use an 88x32 button to promote your sponsors site but, why not? What makes us pick certain types of creatives over others? For most webmasters, the types of creative used on their sites is the accepted norm after all, why change something that others have been using for years right? Wrong.

Turning Ripples In To Waves.

Basing what we know about the way our traffic works and about the main types of creative sizes we can find on almost every affiliate program on the web lets take a look at how we can use the 'same old banners' to create a bigger impact on our bank balance.

468x60 / 480x80 Creatives.

This size of creative is actually most effective towards the top or the bottom of our pages however, this layout has been used on millions of sites, millions of times. A new way to utilize the standard size banner is to actually place it slightly off to the left of the top of the page or, slightly off to the right of the bottom of the page, whilst the placement of the banner for the most part doesn't change much the little that it does change can significantly increase your click throughs.

120x60 Creatives.

As with the standard sized banners above, this type of creative is best suited towards the top or bottom of the page now, with that said, you could try the method described above, placing the button slightly to the left of the top or, slightly to the right on the bottom however, another good use for the 120x60 buttons is to utilize them on your recip link tables for example, most TGP galleries have three or four recip links at the top or bottom of them so, why not reduce the amount of 'actual' recips you have and replace one of these with a 120x60 button? Another alternate method of using 120x60 buttons is to actually have them directly above or below your free site enter and exit links this in itself will draw a few clicks especially if you choose some basic animated 'enter' buttons from your sponsor.

88x32 Creatives.

This is actually one of my own personal favorite sizes of buttons to use on my pages for the simple fact that they can be used just about anywhere on a page that the other sizes mentioned above can be thus, they can be used in the same manner as described above however, another good use for these buttons that I use is to place them directly below or above thumbnail images on my galleries and free sites. This method of using 88x32 icons is especially effective if the site you are promoting with the button matches the niche of the thumbnail picture.

Marketing With Banners - An Overview.

Hopefully you have seen not only how most other webmasters regularly use the different types of promotional materials made available to them but also, how by differing your promotional methods you are able to give your pages a 'unique' feel to them even if, you use the same creatives as everyone else. The main thing to consider when using sponsor provided promotional materials is not only that thousands of other webmasters are also using them ban you differ from the thousands of other webmasters by how you use them yourself.
