Background color for free sites?

Several years ago, when I started making free sites, I made a few of them with orange, yellow and even very flashy red-orange backgrounds. I thought they would be a flop, but it turned out these sites converted best.

Since then I tried black, blue and white backgrouds. Black did better than others but not so well as the 'fiery' colors. Blue sometimes works sometimes not.

What is your experience with backgrounds for free sites? I see there's some logic in that 'fiery' colors can turn on surfers, while colder ones are a turn off, but does it really matter? I'd really like to experiment with other colors, but they need to work :)

The only color I'm certain is bad for any porn site is - green!

Interesting...I have not run any tests on background colors for freesites.

My biggest two color concerns on a freesite are good graphic design with backgrounds complementing the thumbnails and enough variety to keep the approvers at the link lists happy! I use two background colors on each page, one background for the entire page and a different background for emphasis tables.
