The Value Of Traffic These Days?

So im wondering to myself for the last few minutes if its better to trade, buy or generate traffic these days?

It used to be that traffic you traded with other webmasters was a lot easier to get ahold of than it is these days, especially as more and more people tend to be keeping hold of the traffic they do manage to get ahold of.

Now it would seem that buying surfer traffic seems to be the current trend, whether its for seeding new TGPs, sending directly to galleries or free sites etc.

Oh and of course, because of the two reasons above, generating your own traffic seems to be getting harder and harder, especially as those that already have it, are already trading it or selling it to others, which in turn, means there is less traffic to go around for everyone.

What are your folks thoughts on this, has the value of self-generated traffic increased as more and more people sell or trade their traffic to others for profit?
