    sound question

I am getting closer to starting to film content and was curious what you guys use as far as microphones. I really haven't researched them at all yet so I don't know much about them. I do however have the chance to get a Shure SM89 shotgun microphone for a very good deal. If anyone is familiar with this mic could you tell me if it would be overkill. Thanks for the help.

    sound answer.

depending on how good you want the sound, and how indepth you want to be able to control it..

we use a shot gun, on a mic stand a few meters from the action, plus the on board mic on the camera. one mic is fed in to the left sound channel, the other in to the right.

in post, you can then convert both ch's to mono, and mix the sound together.
you can kill any handelling noises from the camera mic etc by using the ambient sound mic.. but by having the onboard mic close to all the action, you can enhance all the grunts and groans..

i think going to all this effort is worth it.. but others will disagree.. most porn is viewed on mute, while the wife is upstairs in bed anyway..

as for the mic you have suggested, that will work, or any other shot gun mic - as an ambient mic.
make sure you always have fresh batterys, and alays monitor the sound when shooting with headphones.

It truely depends on the kind of ambeint sound in your filming environment and the type of sound you want on your finished product.

Do you want an outside shoot with the sound of the birds and water?

    Inside with dialogue?

    Shower?

aer you planning on putting music behind the sound?

EVery one of these needs a different kind of micing and a different kind of mic.
