Heres A Thought Help Compile A List Of Free Applications No Webmaster Should Be Without

I wanted to get a list of programs put together that we can reference new GWW Community members to when they are looking for something specific such as a spyware removal application, .zip archiver, graphics program, etc etc.

With that being said, if you have any links to applications that could help our other community members that are free or, have a free trial, please list them in this thread.

Hopefully a few of our community members will get some use out of this thread as the GWW Community grows more.

Here are my contributions to the list:

WinRar - Zip archiver / extraction utility - Free (Unlimited) Trial.
    http://www.rarlab.com

Spy Sweeper - Spyware / Adware removal program - Free Trial.
    http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper

Core FTP - FTP Clients - Free Version
    http://www.coreftp.com

Add any other applications that you think a webmaster might need to this thread, even if you have alternate products to the ones i listed above

    Regards,

    Lee

I'll toss in my 2 cents worth...

GIMP: Think of it as the free Photoshop.
    http://www.gimp.org/

(The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.)

    Stereograph: - Stereogram generator
    http://stereograph.sourceforge.net/

(Stereograph is a stereogram generator. In detail it is a single image stereogram (SIS) generator. That is a program that produces two-dimensional images that seem to be three-dimensional)

Blender: A cross platform suite of tools for 3D creation.
    http://www.blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html

(Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU Public License.)

    Stopmotion: - Creates stop-motion animations
    http://developer.skolelinux.no/info/...tion/index.htm

(Stopmotion is a free application for creating stop-motion animation movies.)

Sweep: A sound editor for sound samples. It operates on various PCM style files such as .wav, .aiff, and .au.
    http://www.metadecks.org/software/sweep/index.html

(Sweep is an audio editor and live playback tool for GNU/Linux, BSD and compatible systems. It supports many music and voice formats including WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and MP3, with multichannel editing and LADSPA effects plugins.)

Gnucash: Personal and small business money-management software
    http://www.gnucash.org/

(GnuCash allows you to track bank accounts, stocks, income and expenses. As quick and intuitive to use as a checkbook register, it is based on professional accounting principles to ensure balanced books and accurate reports.)

Avidemux: A graphical tool to edit video.
    http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

('Avidemux' is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI, MPEG, Nuppelvideo and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported (M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered (resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG 1/2.)

    Q DVD-Author: DVD authoring suite
    http://qdvdauthor.sourceforge.net/

(A DVD-authoring program that uses command line tools to create the actual video DVD.)

Are these going to be compiled somewhere by category Lee - or would everyone have to search this thread to access the information?

And a few WYSIWYG html editors.

    Nvu: WYSIWYG editor
    http://nvu.com/

(Nvu is a WYSIWYG editor that is designed to make the creation of web sites as easy for novices as it is using commercial web editors like FrontPage and DreamWeaver. It is based on the Mozilla Composer web editor (see elsewhere on this page) and includes new features that will eventually make its way back into Mozilla Composer. This open source editor is available for Linux and Windows.)

    Mozilla Composer: WYSIWYG editor
    http://www.mozilla.org

Mozilla, the web browser, comes with a WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to quickly code web pages using a wordprocessor-like interface. For more information, please read the detailed review of the Mozilla Composer on thesitewizard.com. You can also find a comprehensive tutorial on How to Design and Publish Your Website with Mozilla Composer there.

    Trellian WebPAGE: WYSIWYG editor
    http://webpage.vendercom.com/

Trellian WebPAGE is a free WYSIWYG web editor with a drag and drop interface, a preview screen that allows you to see your page under three common screen widths (640, 800 and 1024), built-in FTP uploader, table creation wizard, form creation tool, etc. It also has a syntax highlighting HTML editor for people who may want to switch to the HTML mode for some fine tuning.

Amaya Web Browsing and Authoring: WYSIWYG editor
    http://www.w3.org/Amaya/Amaya.html

Amaya is an open source browser and WYSIWYG web authoring environment that purports to allow its users to develop web pages without knowing anything about HTML or CSS. You can create your pages, view them, and upload them to your website using this software. It supports CSS (including CSS 2), HTML, XHTML, MathML 2.0 (which allows you to browse and write web pages containing mathematical symbols), etc. There are versions for Windows (a separate one for NT/2000/XP and 95/98/98SE/ME), Linux and Sparc Solaris.

    Netscape Composer: WYSIWYG editor
    http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html

Netscape (yes, the browser) comes with an easy WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to get started with your own web page quickly and easily. It supports the usual text and graphics and is generally adequate for the beginning webmaster. To get it, simply download the full Netscape package. Note that Netscape Composer is probably just an older version of Mozilla Composer (also listed on this page). For more information about Netscape Composer see the detailed review of the Mozilla Composer on thesitewizard.com. You can also find a comprehensive tutorial on How to Design and Publish Your Website with Mozilla Composer there.

I'm just going to copy and paste each link into a Word Doc. That way they can all be in one place and I can click on the links when I'm ready.

    Hey Lee,

You should find a place to post these things in a permanent place on your site, like an advice section for new webmasters, as well as in threads. A lot of this stuff is invaluable, so it would be great to have access to it one specified section for quick and easy reference.
