Heres A Thought Help Compile A List Of Free Applications No Webmaster Should Be Without

I wanted to get a list of programs put together that we can reference new GWW Community members to when they are looking for something specific such as a spyware removal application, .zip archiver, graphics program, etc etc.

With that being said, if you have any links to applications that could help our other community members that are free or, have a free trial, please list them in this thread.

Hopefully a few of our community members will get some use out of this thread as the GWW Community grows more.

Here are my contributions to the list:

WinRar - Zip archiver / extraction utility - Free (Unlimited) Trial.
    http://www.rarlab.com

Spy Sweeper - Spyware / Adware removal program - Free Trial.
    http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper

Core FTP - FTP Clients - Free Version
    http://www.coreftp.com

Add any other applications that you think a webmaster might need to this thread, even if you have alternate products to the ones i listed above

    Regards,

    Lee

I'll toss in my 2 cents worth...

GIMP: Think of it as the free Photoshop.
    http://www.gimp.org/

(The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.)

    Stereograph: - Stereogram generator
    http://stereograph.sourceforge.net/

(Stereograph is a stereogram generator. In detail it is a single image stereogram (SIS) generator. That is a program that produces two-dimensional images that seem to be three-dimensional)

Blender: A cross platform suite of tools for 3D creation.
    http://www.blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html

(Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU Public License.)

    Stopmotion: - Creates stop-motion animations
    http://developer.skolelinux.no/info/...tion/index.htm

(Stopmotion is a free application for creating stop-motion animation movies.)

Sweep: A sound editor for sound samples. It operates on various PCM style files such as .wav, .aiff, and .au.
    http://www.metadecks.org/software/sweep/index.html

(Sweep is an audio editor and live playback tool for GNU/Linux, BSD and compatible systems. It supports many music and voice formats including WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and MP3, with multichannel editing and LADSPA effects plugins.)

Gnucash: Personal and small business money-management software
    http://www.gnucash.org/

(GnuCash allows you to track bank accounts, stocks, income and expenses. As quick and intuitive to use as a checkbook register, it is based on professional accounting principles to ensure balanced books and accurate reports.)

Avidemux: A graphical tool to edit video.
    http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

('Avidemux' is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI, MPEG, Nuppelvideo and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported (M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered (resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG 1/2.)

    Q DVD-Author: DVD authoring suite
    http://qdvdauthor.sourceforge.net/

(A DVD-authoring program that uses command line tools to create the actual video DVD.)

Are these going to be compiled somewhere by category Lee - or would everyone have to search this thread to access the information?

And a few WYSIWYG html editors.

    Nvu: WYSIWYG editor
    http://nvu.com/

(Nvu is a WYSIWYG editor that is designed to make the creation of web sites as easy for novices as it is using commercial web editors like FrontPage and DreamWeaver. It is based on the Mozilla Composer web editor (see elsewhere on this page) and includes new features that will eventually make its way back into Mozilla Composer. This open source editor is available for Linux and Windows.)

    Mozilla Composer: WYSIWYG editor
    http://www.mozilla.org

Mozilla, the web browser, comes with a WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to quickly code web pages using a wordprocessor-like interface. For more information, please read the detailed review of the Mozilla Composer on thesitewizard.com. You can also find a comprehensive tutorial on How to Design and Publish Your Website with Mozilla Composer there.

    Trellian WebPAGE: WYSIWYG editor
    http://webpage.vendercom.com/

Trellian WebPAGE is a free WYSIWYG web editor with a drag and drop interface, a preview screen that allows you to see your page under three common screen widths (640, 800 and 1024), built-in FTP uploader, table creation wizard, form creation tool, etc. It also has a syntax highlighting HTML editor for people who may want to switch to the HTML mode for some fine tuning.

Amaya Web Browsing and Authoring: WYSIWYG editor
    http://www.w3.org/Amaya/Amaya.html

Amaya is an open source browser and WYSIWYG web authoring environment that purports to allow its users to develop web pages without knowing anything about HTML or CSS. You can create your pages, view them, and upload them to your website using this software. It supports CSS (including CSS 2), HTML, XHTML, MathML 2.0 (which allows you to browse and write web pages containing mathematical symbols), etc. There are versions for Windows (a separate one for NT/2000/XP and 95/98/98SE/ME), Linux and Sparc Solaris.

    Netscape Composer: WYSIWYG editor
    http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html

Netscape (yes, the browser) comes with an easy WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to get started with your own web page quickly and easily. It supports the usual text and graphics and is generally adequate for the beginning webmaster. To get it, simply download the full Netscape package. Note that Netscape Composer is probably just an older version of Mozilla Composer (also listed on this page). For more information about Netscape Composer see the detailed review of the Mozilla Composer on thesitewizard.com. You can also find a comprehensive tutorial on How to Design and Publish Your Website with Mozilla Composer there.

What a great idea, Lee :extat:

Here's a free groggy for extracting screenshots from videos.
It will play everything your computer plays - uses all your codecs.
And lets you step forward and backward, frame by frame or use the
slider to go right to the good part - saves snapshots as jpeg's

Seeing the one and two program responces I think I may have gone overboard... But here I go again!

    IMAGE GALLERIES

    gallery: Web-based photo album
    http://gallery.sourceforge.net/

(Gallery is an easy to install photo album that includes a config wizard and lets users create and maintain albums via an intuitive Web interface. Photo management includes automatic thumbnail creation, image resizing, rotation, ordering, captioning and more. Albums can have read, write, and caption permissions per individual; there can also be an authenticated user for an additional level of privacy.)

PhotoGen: Creates a photo gallery from GIFs and JPEGs http://shawley.myip.org/projects/photogen.php

(PhotoGen is a bash shell script that creates photo galleries from a directory of JPEG and GIF images. The script generates thumbnails from the large images, and lets you choose a background color for the gallery add captions to each thumbnail image. Images can be resized without distortion. A home page URL can be added to each page, and you can optionally archive the original images in your working directory)

AutoScrapbook: Creates and maintains an online photo gallery
    http://linux.kaybee.org/autoscrapbook/

(AutoScrapbook helps automate the creation and maintenance of an online photo gallery. It creates the thumbnails and Web pages for you by asking you for descriptions of the pictures. It works best when run within X (for picture viewing), but you could use it through only a terminal and a separate browser.)

EzGallery: Image gallery application for sites that don't support PHP, ASP, or CGI
    http://friant.org/spigot/

('EzGallery' is a GUI desktop application for people who want to publish a Web image gallery on a site that doesn't support PHP, ASP, or CGI programs. It builds static pages that can be uploaded ("published") from within the program. It lets the user quickly create a gallery project, add pictures, write captions and descriptions, pick colors, and set the layout. It will then create the necessary thumbnails and HTML pages. It supports completely automated uploading/updating of the gallery on a remote host.)

    FORUMS

    FUDforum: Templatable forum software
    http://fud.prohost.org/

(FUDforum is templatable forum with i18n support based on PHP and either MySQL or PostgreSQL. Xchangeboard: Forum software based on PHP and MySQL.
    http://www.xchangeboard.de

('Xchangeboard' is forum software based on PHP and MySQL. It offers easy administration for handling design and/or user-specific tasks. The look and feel resembles other well known boards.)

Yet Another PHP Bulletin Board (YapBB) : Bulletin Board software written in PHP
    http://yapbb.sourceforge.net/

(Yet Another PHP Bulletin Board (YapBB) allows you to set up a forum on your Web site, using PHP4+MySQL. The goal of this project is to create a good, full featured, and free bulletin board. Features include multible boards, modular programming, different user authentication levels with appropriate privileges, a certain level of protection to prevent HTML abuse and abuse of other exploits, many client-side options, and more features to come.)

phpBBBlog: Combination of a forum and a blog
    http://www.outshine.com/phpbbblog/

(phpBBBlog' system turns a phpBB forum into a blog. It comes with a sample template, and is easily embedded in a home page. It also provides an RSS 2.0 feed. Features include avators, mini-logs (displays title only), trackbacks, and six different stylesheets.)

    phpBB: UBB-style dissussion board
    http://www.phpbb.com/

('phpBB' is a UBB-style dissussion board with a MySQL database as the backend. Its features includes private forums, posting/replying/editing messages, private messages, user and anonymous posting, robust theming, user ranking by posts or by special, admin definable, ranks, and more.)

    CONTENT MANAGEMENT

    Mambo: Content management tool
    http://www.mamboserver.com/

(Mambo SiteServer is a dynamic Web content management tool that is capable of building sites from several pages to several thousand. It comes complete with 10 built-in modules, a WYSIWYG editor, site statistics, an admin interface, multi language support, custom module support, and more.)

    CHAT

    Ytalk: Multi-user chat program
    http://www.impul.se/ytalk/

('Ytalk' is a multi-user talk program that works like the UNIX talk program but allows for multiple connections and shell sessions inside the talk window. It is compatible with older UNIX talk clients and daemons. You can save any side of the current conversion and define aliases for addresses or hostnames.)

    I'll add some more later

Big Grin FREE Antivirus, FTP, & Spyware Programs!

Here's a couple of free programs I use and highly recommend them.

    >Free Antivirus Program:
    http://www.grisoft.com or http://www.grisoft.com/doc/38/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
This AVG antivirus program works flawlessly without hogging the memory or speed of your PC. Grisoft has also come out with a new Firewall program which I will be downloading and trying.

Free (30 Day Trial) FTP Program: http://www.ipswitch.com or http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/index.asp
WS_FTP provides an easy to use FTP program that is uncomplicated and designed for the newbie or seasoned webmaster. Give this a try for 30 days free, or buy it for the cheap price of $39.95

    >Free Spyware Detect/Removal Program:
    http://www.lavasoft.de/
This Ad-Aware program is free and is similar to SpyBot Search&Destroy yet catches some spyware that SpyBot doesn't catch. Better to have 2 programs to use rather than getting spied on.

Hope you'll try these programs out and let us know how it works for you.

    Kevin
