    Promotional Items

I have seen a lot of sites open up shop and start pushing t-shirts, hats and 8x10 photos.

I have also seen vendor events with condoms, car tags, stickers … as hand outs.

Do handouts work for branding? What handouts work better?

If I hand out a condom, I would think it’s only good until someone rips apart the wrapper and uses it. The branding… Unless it’s an unforgettable rubber with magic power, not so much.

T-shirts: I would think are a better form of promotions.

Pens: if it’s a nice pen, I don’t see why someone would ditch it. No, not one of those “This pen was stolen at”

What else makes a good promotional item for strong branding?

Are you talking surfer or webmaster branding?

    There is a difference

    Fair enough LOL

Well apart from the promo items being given out, and the reasons behind wanting to hand them out in the first place, you also have to consider the location you are handing them out at.

For example, on the webmaster side of things, a few years ago at the Phoenix Forum we held a party with Topbucks and AEBN and handed out DILF condoms and Stud Money pens.

    The reasons were thus..

    1) Condoms.

Condoms were handed out because of the overall 'feel' of the event we held, webmasters were going there to do business however, it was also during Pheonix Pride so there was an inordinate amount of 'consumers' in attendance and a lot of the webmasters there were looking to get laid. By putting the condoms in a bowl on the bar, webmasters could grab them and consumers could also freely grab them, they were used to brand the DILF paysite to the consumers more than affiliates however, if webmasters took condoms, they also saw dilf.com in big lettering on the packaging so they saw our primary site name, as did the consumers who took the condoms.

    2) Pens.

These were branded with the program name, these were used strictly in the area of the party where potential and current affiliates were hanging out, its very rare that anyone at the shows has a pen at the parties so having a bowl full of pens prominently displayed not only meant we could have a brand presence during any aspect of webmasters business where they didnt have pen and paper handy but it also meant that these same people took pens home with them.

Also at the Florida show the year before we had around 20 T-Shirts to hand out, we deliberatly only had that many to give a feel of 'exclusivity' to the handout, people would be walking up to both Gary and I and ask 'Am i a dilf?' trying to get a free t-shirt, actually, i think we gave all those shirts out within about an hour LOL

Another thing that we did for affiliate stuff in Vegas this year with our business cards was to have a blank space on the back of them, where webmasters could write notes about anything they wanted, even if it wasnt anything to do with Condom Cash.

The amount of times i saw people grabbing our business cards at the afterhours suite to write information from other program owners on the backs of them was astounding. So even when someone was talking to a program owner about sending them traffic, they had our program name right in front of them all the time, even when they got home from the show.

In fact, if memory serves correctly, Gary and i only handed out around 50 cards each for Condom Cash and Red Bag Productions, the other 1000 that we had were picked up by people at the suite on their own for the information about Condom Cash, or because they needed something to write on

I have a couple of other promotional ideas im putting together right now for next too which, if they go as i think they will, should be really good for building brand recognition at the first show it gets used at

Badpuppy hands out to both consumer events and industry events; T-shirts, tank tops, pens, beer koozies (very popular at both), cum rags embroidered with our logo & url (also very popular at both) and most popular is pin code cards, whereas the person who receives the card can go to the url on the card, enter the pin code, which then generates a user id and password for our site. We can set the time of expiration at what ever we want, but have found 7 days to work perfect!

The pin code cards are the most cost effective for both and whether used by a surfer who may sign up when it expires, or used by a possible webmaster who's thinking about promoting us, once they get in and see all available at Badpuppy, it works well in either case, surfer or industry!

I agree with lisa and Lee..

I have used both products in the past, and have found that any protional item that needs to be taken away or is unforgetable is worth using.

Aswell as raunchy underwear with some kind of branding as protional items to consumers.. nothing tacky, but with a little site logo embrodded.

Any other idea's would be great to hear :groovy:

One of my absolute favorite pieces of industry swag is my BadPuppy cu... er... golf towel. (tee hee)

But seriously, I use it as my gym towel and even though I workout in a mostly straight gym every once in a while some big stud walks past, catches a glimpse of it and gives me a little smirk. I love it!

I just realized that I wrote the above post while drinking Pomegranate Green Tea from my Epoch thermo coffee mug, which I use every day because it keeps my hot beverages hot. It even replaced the mug I brought back from the Avenue Q gift shop in Vegas that says "The Internet Is For Porn" on it.

A few I was looking at

Air Freshener: the one that hangs from the rear view mirror in your car.

custom scents include: Leather, Cigar, Hemp, Vanilla

    12 month calendar

Digital Camera (I have seen them as low as $20.00 with logo printed next to the LCD)

Ooooh, I have a leather scented air freshener. I have no sense of smell but my friends tell me it smells nice. If you have a kinky leather program a leather scented air freshener with your logo would be perfect.

Personally i would go the air freshener route.

You have to think about the long-term objectives of offering handouts and whilst it is memorable, an air freshner will only be as memorable as it lasts, about 3 weeks tops after which, itll get tossed in the garbage.

    Just my opinion though.

True Lee..Thats why a pen is always good, aslong as they take it home with them.. just enough time to remember your web domain..after which it should be good enough too sell its self

The Air Freshener, though lasting 3 weeks, is lasting. It not only becomes a promotion handout but...

With the Leather. If you run a leather site, the design works and the people love it, you could also sell them on the site. Like 5 for $5.00 +shipping.

Leading to a return to your site for more. (maybe)

A pen - I cannot tell you how many I have lost.

I see too many people get cheep when it comes to pens. "I'll just buy the 500 pen pack of $.03 pens"

If you want a lasting pen, brand with a Mont Blanc. That's not going to get set down when you hand it to someone. It also says, we have a higher quality of business.

Here is Florida, we have the big 3. Golf, Tennis and Fishing. You do one of the three. (I do all three)

Promotional items in the big 3 are things like a vibe dampener, a new style club or lure you can't buy. (At least in the bigger, more exclusive meetings and market vendor gatherings)

a Teflon-coated "keyboard" towel? For those times when tissue simply will not do!

Based on was left after trade shows: we ran out of pens 1st & whitet t-shirts with minimal adverts/text went second. We had a very difficult time giving away keychains (too wierd looking) and any t-shirts that had very large ads/text.

    My favorite...

I have attended the following shows:

AVN Vegas (3 times) (And thus the GayVN when they had it)
    Internext Vegas (2 times)
    Gay Phoenix Forum

From all those events, gift baskets, etc. The only things still around are:

Menonthenet.com Back Scratcher from GPF. I LOVE This and use it every day.

    Pens and more pens.

One Hackey Sack thing, but I don't remember who's it is...

    And Lighters.

Really, the Back Scratcher is my favorite, and I will keep it forever. The lighters I use a lot (to smoke.) and the pens I use every day.

Functionality is better than a gimick in my mind.
