    some other suggestions:

    1. Mouse Pads

    2. Note Paper

    3. Coffee Mugs

The coolest thing I remember getting at a trade show was a stack of note paper, on what looked like a mini wooden pallet, with the advertiser's name inked on all four sides of the stack itself. That sat on my desk for 2 years.

Who here thinks a hemp scented auto air freshener is a good idea? "Honestly officer, I was NOT smoking cannabis!"

I had the exact same thought, but what do I know?

From the shows I've been to, the only things I'm still using years later are t-shirts with minimal branding on them (nothing blatantly porny), pens, and a flashcash bouncy ball that flashes when it moves. (4 years old and still flashes! The baby loves it. *grin*) Oh, a content provider sends me a little mini-calendar every year with their branding on the top, the back has a strip of sticky tape so you can stick it to the bottom of your monitor (or wherever). Very useful, and the branding is kid-friendly.

Most innovative thing I've seen at a show was the PayPal guys with a big plastic container of Tylenol (2 pills in a packet). God knows you need those at shows. If you could get the packets branded, it'd be cool... but wouldn't have much lasting power *after* the show unless you insisted everyone take a huge handful of packets.

The notepad idea is ingenious and incredibly useful.
Also, branded lanyards with a "pocket" attached with a clear plastic front; the webmasters can put their show pass or ID into that and it's hanging right in clear view, plus they can stuff all of the business cards they get into it.
For that matter, a business card holder with your company name and info on the front would be really good. (They look like odd-sized wallets with clear plastic inserts inside that hold 6 business cards per page, two-sided.) Add a small pad of paper in it and you're golden, they'll be using that like crazy.

For webmasters, mini-CDs with promo content works, for consumers, mini-CDs with sample videos and adverts for your sites would work.
I love Lisa's pin pass card idea - that's nearly a must-have for consumer freebies.

For webmasters, think of the setting of the convention setting itself and what it lacks. Whatever it lacks, position your booth to provide. Places to sit? Tall waist-high tables where folks can set their stuff and write things down? Fans to cool off if the A/C doesn't work too well when it's crowded? A big water cooler with paper cups with your logo? Tables where more than 2 people can gather and discuss things? (In Montreal we had a few tables with chairs right in front of our booth, as such our booth was constantly packed and folks were still talking about the great biz the discussed there and thanking us for those tables a year later.) Maybe little travel alarm clocks, branded of course. Folks would use those at the show and keep/use them for years.

What about the smokers? If there's an outdoor smoking area that has no shade or fans, talk to the convention coordinators about renting a space out on the smoker's patio and put a tent out there with some portable A/Cs or fans blowing if it's hot. We really needed this in Florida when I went to Internext down there the first year, dunno if someone has done it since, I've pitched the idea to a few people. The smokers would really appreciate and remember you for that.

You don't want to go for horribly expensive, because both the webmasters and consumers grab freebies by the handful even if they don't need/want them. If it's free, they take it.

Also remember that many webmasters work out of their homes, so anything you give to them that you intend for them to keep and use (like a coffee mug), it should always have kid-friendly (relative-friendly, neighbor-visiting-friendly) branding/graphics on it. Stuff with "FuckMeUpTheAss.com" will get tossed or stuffed in a closet never to see the light of day.

Mainly what both the webmasters and consumers need at the most basic level though, are enough reps to talk to. I can't tell you how many booths I saw that just had 1 or 2 people staffing them, and folks would wait around for a few minutes to try to get a chance to ask a question and then finally give up and walk away. Your first and foremost aim in being there is to make *contact* with the webmaster or consumer and answer any questions they might have so they feel comfortable using your program/product/service/site.
