    Top Movie Formats For Porn?

So im about to have a programmer start re-writing some of the coding for my custom CMS that im using on the Condom Cash sites and was wondering, other than the regular, .wmv, .mpg and .mov what other formats are there for movies?

Right now im pretty limited to the movie types i can include inside the members areas but i want to change that by adding a few more options, the problem is, because ive been so limited to what ive been able to use the past year or so, ive really not kept up with what others were using when it came to their movie formats.

So, other than the 3 i mentioned above, what other movie formats should i including in this script?

    Regards,

    Lee

We talked about this on the phone earlier today, but I thought I'd mention here as well, I offer a high and low resolution wmv, mp4 and flash. I also have wmv 30 second clips and I may start offering flash 30 second clips. I love flash I've noticed a significant increase in member retention over the last couple of months, and I think it has to do with all the movie formats I offer.

most popular are probably wmv, mpg and quicktime. and i think mpg is only a way of having a video that both mac and pc users can watch - for pc users, wmv streams so you don't have to wait and that's a big plus.

i'm seeing more flash videos, but i suspect partly this is so people can't download the movies.

If you want lot's of formats, I'd add Flash and RealMedia to your list. I know a lot of people don't like RM but it a very good alternative for Mac and PC. Don't most PCs come with RealPlayer installed? And the quality-to-files size ratio is better than .wmv in my opinion.

I thought that mp4s could play on mac?

Also, I like flash as a streaming substitute, not a replacement for downloads. It's much cheaper because you don't have to set up a streaming server. They are also good for preview clips and galleries, etc. because of the customization you can do with the swf player. As I said before, I love flash

I think that mpg is the way to go for very high resolution downloads.

And why are people always saying that you can't play .wmv on Macs?

becky - wmvs stream without requiring any streaming software or servers. it's what i love most about them and so far, flash videos are larger in k and lower in quality than our best quality videos but we are thinking of adding them because almost everyone can see them.

most people don't want to download something in order to watch movies - and also i gather that won't work on the newest and oldest macs.

Well, disagree with that completely. Surfers will do just about anything for porn... even visit P2P networks and risk infection from viruses. So I'm guessing that most Mac users would reluctantly accept the dominance of Windows Media.

And as far as compatibility goes...

    Windows Media Player
    Download Now!
Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X
Windows Media Player 7.1 for for Mac OS 8.1-9x
    Flip4Mac
Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or later

Windows Media is very imperfect on Macs. Last I heard, DRM simply doesn't work at all with WM for Mac, and many, many people report problems with WM on Mac, even when it should work.

I get the distinct impression that Micro$oft really doesn't *want* it to work seamlessly.

I think Flash is the best cross-platform option (the % of Windows users that have Flash is something like 80% vs much much smaller for QT) but... you have to also consider that your bandwidth will go up since people can't (without some effort) download your flash videos and may therefore watch them multiple times, increasing bandwidth. On the other hand, they also can't download a ton of videos to watch later, so bandwidth from that is cut down, unless you already have tools in place to prevent that.

From previous discussions I've had, I was under the impression that if you wanted true streaming of wmv, vs a progressive download "stream", you had to have a streaming server. If that's not the case, it seems I've been misinformed.

True streaming, particularly the ability to do the multi bit rate streams that WMV supports, requires a streaming server.

Some browsers will do progressive download and start playing the file before it's finished.

I hate it when that happens, there's nothing more annoying than previewing a clip and actually following whats happening, then having to wait an extra 5 minutes for the download to catch up with player

I think you can control this in the player/browser. I know that in Firefox options, you can decide whether to download a wmv or play it automatically.

If you have to wait 5 mins for the download to catch up, I think it's time to upgrade your internet connection
