    Bombs going off in Bangkok

We were just at a new years eve party in Bangkok and we were over run with police. They are cancelling New Years eve celebrations because someone has set off bombs in at least 4 locations in bangkok, with more than 20 people dead so far.

    This is fucking horrible.

I believe that Tom is safer in Bangkok than certain parts of LA, Detroit, Philadelphia, Miami, Washington DC ...... Phoenix, Chicago and any metro area over 1 million people in the US. Bangkok, like all cities, has both good and bad neighborhoods. Also, like US cities, Bangkok is vulnerable to individuals or small groups that want to terrorize the population. Washington DC had its sniper. Phoenix had a serial rapist/murderer just this year. New York City had airplanes running into buildings. The residents stayed put.

No place is 100% safe. Bombs going off and hurting people is a scary thing. But I would not encourage Tom to leave Bangkok because of it -- that is what they want and there is no guarantee he is any safer on this side of the Pacific.

Interesting that they set off a few bombs, perhaps too early. the first 6 went off hours before midnight, then the other 2 or 3 went off in areas that would have been packed just after midnight....

Interestingly the Patpong, and Silom gay areas were packed with people anyway, even after news of the bombs.. could not even tell that anything was wrong and they were even joking about it... Thai's are interesting.... if it doesn't concern them directly, they don't get involved.. they look, listen, and keep on doing what they were doing..

anyway all is fine here. i'm sure it will play hell with tourism though.

By the time the morning comes, way more people in the US will have died from DUIs on the roads than died from bombings in Thailand. Bangkok's as safe a city as anywhere else, regardless of what happened.

So, don't get out. Just keep your wits about ya and go on having fun, as I'm sure you're already doing. Glad to see you're safe and have a great new year!

It would be more accurate if you used a size comparison of California to Thailand. But Thailand also has many road deaths as part of every major holiday as Thais love their Whiskey and any holiday is a good reason to have a party, and that does not seem to deter them from speeding around on their motorbikes in the provinces... Bike deaths are one of the leading causes of deaths here.
