Learning The Mainstream Terminology.

As more and more adult affiliate programs start their progression into the mainstream world we are going to become bombarded with some terminologies that, until recently, we would have never heard of so, with that in mind lets take a brief look at what some of the more popular terms are in the word of the mainstream internet when it comes to affiliate programs.

Advertiser.

An advertiser is the company who own the product you are promoting. For example, the individual companies providing herbal supplements in the ARS program, each of these companies is classified as an 'advertiser' who's products you are promoting.

Click Stream.

A click stream is the recorded path that any given surfer takes when going through one or more websites. For example, one of your surfers, to end up on your sponsors site may have taken the click stream of, dmoz.org > google.com > yourdomain.com > ARS. Click streams become important to us as webmasters because it helps us to understand not only the habits of our surfers but also the methods of which our traffic arrives on our sites and ultimately, to our sponsors.

(CPA) Cost Per Action Advertising.

Cost per action is what an advertiser will pay a publisher in order to get one of the publishers surfers to respond to a specific ad. In other words, The affiliate program will pay you a certain amount of money when a surfer joins a newsletter for example.

(CPL) Cost Per Lead Advertising.

Cost per action based affiliate payouts are an even more specific form of cost per action sales leads which provide the advertiser with enough information in order to be able to close a sale.

(CPS) Cost Per Sale.

This is the simplest form of publisher payout rates, every time you make a sale to an advertisers site or product, you make a flat fee commission.

Creatives.

This is just another name for banners, buttons and other types of 'promotional materials' used in the mainstream world.

(PPL) Pay Per Lead.

In pay-per-lead advertising, the advertiser pays for each sales lead generated. For example, an advertiser might pay for every visitor that clicked on a site and then filled out a form._

Publisher (Affiliate) Network.

A publisher network is the mainstream term for an affiliate program that offers a wide range of advertisers and products as well as having a base of webmasters being able to promote those advertisers and products such as ARS or, Dark Blue.

Mainstream Webmaster Jargon - An Overview.

Whilst to many of us these terms may not seem as daunting as many webmasters will think we will definitely start to hear more and more of them in the adult industry and certainly over the next 6-12 months many of these terms will become common place in our day to day business practices.
