There are no doubt countless definitions of what a 'webmaster' is, what they do, who they work for and, more importantly how much they get paid however, for many internet companies the job role of a webmasters is being given more and more weight as a senior level employment position with the webmaster themselves being responsible for not only coding the HTML of a single or collection of websites but rather becoming more and more responsible for managing not only the existing web work but also assisting in the developmental stages of many companies websites.

A Webmasters Job Description.

As we have seen above there is a wide range of responsibilities being handed to employees with the title of webmaster however, the general, everyday job description of a webmaster tends to include the following:

* Coding HTML
* Working with graphics designers to develop and maintain a companies website.
* Ensuring that bandwidth levels are not exceeded by fully optimizing web pages.
* Managing the content on a variety of sites in a variety of mediums.
* Uploading / Downloading pages and graphics to servers as required.
* Ensuring servers are running at optimal performance.
* Assist in development of programs utilizing asp, net, php and perl in addition to some JavaScript and css work.

While this list is by no means exhaustive, it is far from complete as many companies will have individual needs of their webmasters when it comes to the specific roles a webmaster will play in their organization.

A Webmasters Qualifications.

The one good thing about looking for employment as a webmaster is that the list of 'formal' qualifications more often than not are outweighed by the mass of real 'hands on' experience however that being said, companies who are looking to hire a webmaster will require that you have at least skills in the following areas:

* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* The ability to document coding procedures.
* The ability to follow a variety of written and drawn instructions precisely.

In essence, if you are a good communicator and can follow instructions there is no reason why you couldn't become successful as a webmaster of a company so long as you have the skills and qualifications they are looking for.

A Webmasters Salary.

In all honesty it was only recently that I discovered the true value companies place on their employees working as webmasters however, that being said, ultimately the annual salary paid to a webmaster will fluctuate from company to company based on the amount of financial resources made available to them but, a ballpark salaries of a webmaster should be in the price range of between $30,000 and $50,000 a year sometime being as high as up to $65,000.

The Webmasters Job - An Overview.

When all is said and done many people and companies look at a webmaster as the driving force of their online and offline web marketing, often a webmasters work will be the first thing their clients will see before they have even made contact with the company. As more and more companies start to grow there will inevitably be a wider reach to the webmasters job description not only from an employers point of view but also from the employees themselves.
