Bail Set At $50,000 For Lesbian Teacher

A physical education teacher has been charged with sexual assault for engaging in an apparently consensual relationship with a 17-year-old female student she taught and coached at a southern New Jersey high school.

Erica Umosella, a 28-year-old faculty member at Kingsway Regional High School, was arrested Tuesday. She is charged with three sex-related offenses, including first-degree aggravated sexual assault, according to Bernie Weisenfeld, spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors said that the relationship between the teacher and student played out over the past month in Umosella's apartment in Glassboro, N.J. They did not believe that any sexual behavior took place on campus and said that no other students appeared to be involved.

Police said they were led to Umosella after Ave Altersitz, the superintendent of the Kingsway Regional School District, gave police an anonymous letter she had received about the affair late Tuesday night. The letter was also sent to school principal Thomas Coleman. Altersitz and Coleman met Wednesday with a police officer who works in the school before turning the information over to law enforcement officials.

Altersitz said there was no indication of who sent the letter that brought the relationship the authorities' attention.

The student is a senior at Kingsway Regional High School, Weisenfeld said, where she played on a girl's field hockey team coached by Umosella and was also her student in a health class.

"This is rare for our area," said Russell Marino, police chief for Woolwich Township, one of the area departments undertaking the investigation. "But obviously, these two got exposed."

About 10 percent of all children -- boys and girls, in kindergarten through 11th grade -- report receiving some type of sexual harassment by an adult while in school.

Experts said that while reports of teacher sexual misconduct are rising, it is difficult to know if there has been an increase in the number of actual occurrences of teacher sexual abuse because no previous studies have ever been conducted to give scientists a baseline for comparison.

What is certain, however, is that the vast majority of teachers who harass or abuse their students are men. Men make up just 15 percent of all teachers, yet are responsible for two-thirds of all sexual abuse.

Umosella, a teacher at Kingsway since 2003, was suspended from her teaching and coaching positions effective Thursday. Prior to this incident, Umosella had never been in any trouble as a faculty member. All efforts to reach Umosella by ABC News were unsuccessful.

She was released from police custody after paying $50,000 in bail.

What i find interesting, is that if the information they provided in bold is true, why is it we only hear about the female teachers getting jiggy with their students?

I suppose its the whole "Women are more nurturing than men" idea. Teaching has traditionally be a female job (minus preacher schools of the early Americas) since it requires a connection with kids on an emotional level that males didn't normally seem to possess. Thats why they are coachs, because its a physical class.

The idea that a woman would go beyond her "role" as a nurturer of the mind and do something physical with a student always seems to shock people. A woman is suppose to be in control of herself and as a female she should have a natural "motherly instinct" to protect all children. People see women as the preprogrammed robots who will automatically take on a parent role when children are preset. Obviously these people have never seen me scream at a kid when he's messing around in my Dept. at work.

But when a man does it, he isn't looked at as a teacher, he's looked at as a man who has perverted tendancies. His profession is ignored and he's only judged on his gender. They are seen as not having the kind of control over their desires as women do and they aren't seen as natural fathers. Apparently people think its something a man has to learn, it isn't intuitive.

Because the media is controlled by men, men who fantasized about having sex with some of their female teachers when they were kids in school.

I remember so many different girls having crushes on their teachers in school. It's a common thing for both sexes.

It's just another example of sexist hypocracy in our society :corncob:

Because if a male student has sex with a female teacher the student is a stud and should be celebrated.

If a female student has sex with a male teacher then that is wrong and the student was a victim of abuse.

Aren't they? As far as I know this has always been true.

Not to say there aren't plenty of nurturing guys, mind you.

Women are nurturing yes, but we are expected to be that way with anyone under 18. Me? I'm that way with anyone under 12. Once they hit twelve they need to start facing some realties of life. My opinion is once puberty kicks in, we need to start dealing with the real life issues they are going to face in life.

Before then I'll do what I can to keep the "safe", but then again I have my own definition of that too. Thats how my parents raised me.:fool:

I agree. When my son started the P things change chemically, emotionally and physically and it turns into a big balancing game and time for learning, both for the child and adult :bomb:

But regardless of what a man does or doesn't do when he reaches a certain age, women always seem to be more nurturing regardless. That's just my experience. I know what people SHOULD do, but what they DO do is something else ...

Every time one of those 'female teacher sleeps with male student' stories breaks the industry boards are full of 'wow, where were these teachers in my days?!'

To me..female/male, male/female. female/female, or male/male ..there is no excuse for abuse of power and even if the student 'wanted it' that is where a teacher - or any adult - should use their adult judgement and know that just because somebody 'wants' something doesn't make it appropriate.

The people that go on about how the boys 'want it' and therefore the female teachers didn't do anything wrong mineaswell be writing propaganda for NAMBLA.
