Rocky, you make it sound like you have to be Indiana Jones to get there
It's not nearly that bad... the walk from Torrey Pines is flat and maybe 10 minutes if I remember right, and I agree that the path from the cliffs is tiring, but not particularly dangerous.
But... were you being facetious about easy surveillance? You could certainly keep track visually, but unless there are parabolic microphones with really long range, I don't know how you'd be able to track conversation.
As an aside, I'm guessing the police handling the surveillance were underwhelmed at having to watch Harlow and Sean (and perhaps Grant and Joseph) cavort naked on the beach... they probably had to go and watch straight porn that night to get rid of the images in their heads
The lifeguards have ways to listen in. I am always looking out for them when I shoot down there because they have an innate ability to pinpoint us (or others who try to escape for a little xxx rendezvous) when we are hidden deep in the sandstone cliffs. Officers could very well be disguised as tourists on the beach without garnering suspicion. God knows I never get naked when I go down there (shut up, Squirt :-P).
And yes, I hate that fucking walk down and back up that cliff. I have never walked from Torry Pines, but I HAVE walked form La Jolla Shores and hated it. Although I DID find a nice little non-populated spot of nude-free beach with warm water and a nice even tide along the way.
The only problem was the tide on the way back and having to traverse giant, lichen covered stones as it was rapidly rising and becoming ever more threatening.

La Jolla Shores probably *is* a mile or two. I think Torrey Pines is a lot closer. I used to go there fairly frequently when I lived in San Diego, it's a pretty beach and because it's so damn difficult to get to, it tends to not be terribly crowded, which is why I liked it.
Interesting about the surveillance, though. I still remember reading in some guidebook, talking about Black Beach, the phrase "action in the dunes" which always made me giggle, as it sounds like a porn title.
I don't know anyone involved in this but if I had to bet, I'd say there was some kind of drugs involved. You have to be WAY out there to stab someone 28 times.
If I were to guess, I would say that the two glasses of wine found at the scene and the excessive stabbing were part of the plan to make it look like a crime of passion.
Just a guess.

(PS: I believe tht I had read somewhere that Bryan was stabbed after he was already dead, which is why there were no defensive wounds on his arms.)

Rocky,
Originally they were saying that the lack of defensive wounds were either because he knew the person who attacked him and that it happened so quick that there was no chance to react. The other guess was that his throat was slit first, followed by the stab wounds.
The fact that Sean Lockhart has yet to be charged with anything in this would lean one to think that he did in fact cooperate with authorities in order to save his own hide, although not saying anything in the beginning and letting Bryan get murdered is still unforgiving.
I can't say that this helps to get closure for those of us who knew Bryan and called him a friend or collegue. I am happy to see that the two that did this were caught, although at the cost of yet another black mark to stain our industry.
If I were to play armchair detective, I would surmise that Harlow's accomplice was laying in wait, unbeknownst to Bryan. Since Bryan was, or appeared to be, familiar with Harlow, his guard would be down. He would have been attacked and had his throat slit from behind, therefore no defensive wounds on his forearms. What the reports coming out fail to mention is if the charges of corpse abuse are from the burning of the house and, sub-sequently, Bryan's body, or of being stabbed 28 times post-mortem.
Having his throat cut from behind also wouldn't leave trace evidence, like blood, on the attacker.
Again, just a total and complete assumption. Do not take it as gospel or fact.

With Bryan being as much of a recluse as he was though, I dont' think the 2nd person would ever have a chance to get into the house. The house opened into the living room and Bryan would have surely locked the door immediately after letting his "guest" in. Harlow getting overally friendly with Bryan and going behind the couch to offer him a shoulder massage or something was how I pictured it happening. After that was done, he probably let his partner in the house to help finish up the task, who was probably hiding in the truck up until that point.
I doubt if the two will ever confess to a fully disclosed confession of it all, so we may never know exactly how it happened, although knowing the "why" behind it is disturbing enough.
