I stick with one popunder or nothing at all. I don't like being harassed by window after window of links and don't expect other surfers to like it either. So same as Bec says one is enough if they see it when they close the site.

    Cheers,

    Regarding Pop-Ups:

The general practice among typical business websites on pop-ups is two. That is, two pop-ups for when the user lands on your website.

For example, if you go to a major newspaper site, that is pretty much what you get. In fact, if you participate in the Google AdWords program, they will insist on a limit of 2 pop-ups on your site. In my opinion, more then 2 pops is simply unprofessional.

On my porn site, I don't use pop-ups really. There is an exception (of course). On my highest traffic pages - the ones that receive newcomer people surfing in from Google - I run a pop-up that advertises the site's newsletter.

I have found this technique to be a very good way to get newsletter signups. Which of course is a marketing tool to capture your reader, and gets them coming back to see your new stuff.
