I agree -- it certainly grabs your attention. I have always felt B&W gave photos an artistic edge that you just don't achieve with color.

When you get older it's good to have something firm to grasp hold of as you get out of the pool. Who needs handrails?

Black and white is hard to do well with digital. A friend got the Leica black and white camera this year and that is pretty good. But I still think film has the edge. However digital is brilliant for colour.

Not to mention that we can show the images immediately. When I had my studio I can't tell you how often I would of LOVED to have had the ability to pretty much take unlimited photos at a wedding... and then display them at the reception! Plus things like running out of film, or the film not moving through the camera, or bad lighting have pretty much left the pro arena as embarrassing fuck ups.

That's so true Bec. I love black and white film but in general when I hear people pining for film I think of my teenage and student years when I didn't have the money to take as many photos or as much movie film as I would have liked. Pre-2003 when I used to go and shoot the Pride event, which was for fun, I would go straight to the lab with say four films and it would cost maybe 25 Pounds ($40) for processing. Then I'd have to scan them all which would take 30 minutes a roll in the neg scanner. Then the Photoshop tweaking would begin.

When I lived out in the countryside in the early 1990s and was shooting for magazines it was a 100 mile round trip to the lab and the slides had to be posted to the magazine. Many a time I edited, cut them up, mounted and captioned them in the post office

My favourite feature on modern (Canon) cameras is the optical image stabiliser. I like taking pics at night and it's incredible what you can get compared to the days of film. Plus the results on a modern DSLR at high ISOs like 3200 are amazing. I bought a Canon 600D recently.

black and white photography is "sharper" which explains why color is constantly trying to increase resolution to correct the problem! , I know some of you are thinking ... well I'll just take a color photo to ADOBE and hit the B & W button , not the same! - LOL

film will always have the "edge" especially those of us that want that naked man on a chaise lounge "poster size!" ... there are just some things WALMART PHOTO LAB refuses to do for me! - LOL ( interpreted: People still want "big" and having "dark room" experience ... not to be confused with sex club! ... just makes me that much more valuable! )

I wish the "chemical mix" baths and superior "photo stock paper" were cheaper! ... it's limiting my reproduction quantities. ( interpreted: I love developing Film in my "dark room" ... it's like my own private "red light" sex club and the scent is similar to "taiwan blue poppers!" - LOL )
