Best web hosts for low bandwidth site?

Well, I'm finally ready to get my website online (after two years of saying I was). I've finally gotten the vacation from work I needed.

It's likely going to be a low bandwidth site - it's something along the lines of juliustoons.com, The Theban Band, ianhanks.com; i.e., mostly erotic art (some really explicit) and stories (a sort of erotically gay Lord of the Rings or Conan the Barbarian).

But I need to find a supportive web host. I've been looking at Cavecreek and Godaddy, among others. Cavecreek seems to have the advantage of being a part of CCBill, which I'll eventually use, I think - but it seems pretty expensive compared to Godaddy's web hosting.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Thanks!

I didn't think GODADDY did ADULT HOSTING or is your site concept considered more "art"?

    congrats and welcome!

Thanks, Jim! :icon_biggrin: That is much appreciated info! No, it's more than just "art" (think Roger, Tom of Finland, Julius). So that narrows it down for me already. It's lookin' like Cavecreek at this point.

I use GODADDY as my registrar ( I have mainstream sites so it's easier keeping all the account register data in one place. ) they always have renewal/newsite discount promotion codes going on , unfortunately they've never accepted any of my adult sites ... I even tried using less colors to make it faster loading and somewhat obscure the nudity! - LOL

hopefully someone get's back to you on adult hosting options , again congrats!

    Thanks again, Jim. :kiss cheek:

Ironically, daddymugs.com is registered with GoDaddy (their company name is SO appropriate for the theme of his site - LOL), and there seems to be no problem! Thus, I wonder about their inconsistency...but inconsistency is enough to keep me away.

Yes, if anybody has a better suggestion than Cavecreek as a host (which is looking pretty convenient and safe now), let me know!

    Thanks!

They've had a bad rep in the past (from some, while others like them), but it's sort of you "get what you pay for" I guess..but dreamhost.com is currently having unlimited storage/bandwidth for $8.95 a month.

I can certainly recommend TDM Hosting they have an excellent technical support team who are very polite, approachable always willing to help. I have unlimited disc space unlimited bandwidth and yes the allow adult sites to be hosted on their servers.

One thing I like about them is that they will install software, software updates, add-on's, modules and themes for you. All this and more for the ridiculous price of $3.85 per month. www.tdmhosting.com Please feel free to contact me if you wish to know anything.

Good luck with your new venture

    Hello, friends!

First of all, let me admit right out that I'm pretty much a paranoid with an anxiety disorder :couch:, besides being a very erotic gay artist (if I may be permitted to say so) and webmaster. I still feel that I have a beautiful gay site to offer - I've worked on this homoerotic art and very sexy story for a decade (it goes into Tolkienesque length and content, with Julius/Ian Hanks-type content) - a whole fantasy world of gay sex.

@Smarttalk, first, :kiss cheek: thank you for your kind recommendation. However, I found this in TDM Hosting's AUP (hard to find!):

"4. Your website can not contain adult, explicit, inappropriate materials or link to such resources. The Company reserve the right to determine which content is appropriate and violations may result to account suspension or account termination without further notice."

That would prohibit my content. :str:

@Bec, thank you too :kiss cheek: for your recommendation of Naked Hosting. I found this in their AUP:

"By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when you (or your end users are) using a Service, you (and you end users) will not:...
"C. Publish, post, upload, distribute, traffic or disseminate any defamatory, obscene, or otherwise unlawful content, such as child pornography."

This doesn't seem to restrict the content in my site (no c.p.), but I also found this in Naked (Certified) Hosting's AUD:

"However, by posting, uploading, inputting, providing or submitting (“Posting”) your Submission you are granting Certified Hosting permission to use your Submission in connection with your site, including, without limitation, the license rights to: copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, translate and reformat your Submission; to publish your name in connection with your Submission; and the right to sublicense such rights to any supplier of a Service."

I'm not sure what this means, but it makes me a bit uncomfortable. :puzzled:

@Mansized :kiss cheek: - thank you so much for suggesting dreamhost.com. I only found this in their AUP:

"Illegal Activity: Customer may only use DreamHost Web Hosting’s Server for lawful purpose. "Transmission of any material in violation of any Country, Federal, State or Local regulation is prohibited. To this effect, child pornography is strictly prohibited..." -- which doesn't pertain to my content.

They seem to have a more liberal AUP than Cavecreek!...BUT in the fine print, the $8.95 is asterisked with this: "$8.95/mo with two-year prepayment of $214.80." Whoa.

    Cavecreek's AUP says this:

"Obscene Speech or Materials: Using Cavecreek's network to advertise, transmit, store, post, display, or otherwise make available child pornography or obscene speech or material is prohibited. In addition, Cavecreek is required by law to notify law enforcement agencies when it becomes aware of the presence of child pornography on or being transmitted through Cavecreek's network."

Okay, no issue with the "c.p.", but what does the word "obscene" actually mean in legal terms???

Thanks for being patient with me! I really appreciate y'all's help!! I promise to calm down once I get into a secure niche and get into operation.

I doubt it's anything to get your panties twisted into a knot over, but I have sent off a support ticket to Certified Hosting and have requested that they clarify just what that part of the TOS means. I'll let you know what they say.

    Hi Jaroq,

You have surprised me with the information, which I have confirmed to be correct. However I have two explicit adult gay sites, which their technical help department has worked on when there has been a problem. I am as baffled as you are.

There is one possibility and that is I have a resellers account with TMD Hosting so I would be willing to set an account up for the same price. If you are interested please send me an email. Always happy to help a fellow GWW'er

    And here is their reply:

We do host many adult and gay websites. There are no issues with this.

Legal adult content is acceptable. "Obscene" is referencing content that would be considered NOT legal, such as the example given.

We will not be doing anything with your website. This statement simply means that by using our services, you are allowing us to host your website on the internet and in order to do that we must submit your web pages and content to the internet. This statement just means that you are allowing us to host and publicly display your website.

If at some point, we were to receive any type of copyright complaint, we do have the right to remove content from your website. We would however be notifying you of this complaint.

Please let me know if this addresses your concerns. Our TOS is very standard and any reputable hosting company would have something the same or very similar.

    Thank You,
    Danni
    Certified Hosting Client Care
Which is what I always thought it meant, but had never had it confirmed. You are giving them the right to host and display your website on the internet.

    Thanks, Bec!

Before I read your message, I'd already sent off a question about this to them. I got pretty much the same reply from Danni, so I signed up with them today.

Thanks again for the recommendation! :icon_biggrin:

They've been pretty prompt so far in getting things set up. Everything's operational now - FTP, domain name, e-mail...I just have to fill it with content! :groovy:

    You're the greatest, Bec!

Ok Great! I hope you have a long and fruitful experience with Naked Hosting and your new website.

Be sure to stop by the forum and keep us up to date on how it's coming along. And by all means, ASK QUESTIONS~!! It saves a lot of grief to get help from others that have been where you are now .... we all started out as newbies!
