Luke is in Costa Rica Earthquake Area

Just heard from Luke ( he lives in Costa Rica now ) and he says no one is hurt after a major 7.9 earthquake hit Costa Rica early this morning. They've lost power and water and no idea when that will be available again. Here's some current news on the internet about the quake

hey everyone....wow, what a shake! First off, thank you to everyone for sending messages and good karma. We are fine, we only had some minor breakages like dishes and bottles that fell off of shelves. The biggest issue was that power / water / phone / internet were all down. I am happy to report that power, water & phone returned about an hour ago and we have internet via the cell phone network now, hopefully full internet will come back shortly too.

Some interesting facts about this quake: it was a 7.6 magnitude, it lasted 1 minute and 10 seconds, with 3 strong aftershocks of magnitude 5.0, 4.6 and 4.6. There have been over 200 additional small aftershocks in the last 24 hours. Yesterday also marks the anniversary of the biggest ever quake in New York, that one was in 1944 and that record still stands, it was a magnitude of 5.8

Hey Luke! Glad to hear you are ok. Make sure you stay that way.
Tell you what, I think maybe you could use an extra hand (or two) to take care of you two, so why not fly me down for about a month's stay and I'll help ya get "back to normal". Heh? (cannot WAIT for your answer! :-)

We have had 2 earthquakes in Cali in the past week. Nothing like what Luke went through. But a couple little ones is better then 1 big one. But im sure people would say the same thing for hurricanes too.

Glad to hear you are OK Luke!

You mentioned bottles breaking. As long as it was not bottles of alcohol you'll make it through this!

Considering how quickly you're back up it sounds like Costa Rica really has their act together.

Yeah sure that would be a fucking blast, mate!!! Tell ya what, you scrape up the chump change from your vast fortunes & get here, I will gladly make up the spare bed and have you as a guest :-)

Its amazing, I discovered stacking bottles on their side is an incredible way to save them during a quake. Having glasses on an open shelf, on the other hand, is not!

...but, yes, I am actually (truly) amazed at how well prepared Costa Rica is to deal with these things. I guess its just normal to have to weather thru torrential downpours, earthquakes, hillside slips, etc here. I can tell ya something, in comparison to Panama, CR is first world all the way!

just so you are aware, we had a 5.6 'aftershock' quake today. And to add to the fun, I got back from San Jose this evening and made it about 500 meters from my home to come to a full stop thanks to a giant sinkhole that opened in the road, causing a ~50 ft tree to fall across the road and knock out the power lines. So bring your flashlight!!!!

That was no sink hole! I catapulted myself down from Seattle this afternoon..hard landing!
