I Wonder? Do You Have To Be Gay...

To run a gay site? What would the advantages be? What would the disadvantages be?

You do realize by 'gay' I mean a man who has sex with other men?

Do you have to be straight to run non-gay sites?

I dont htink it matters on the individuals sexual preference at the end of the day. If they can sell a product, site or service and make money then more power to them.

I know some very good straight webmasters who only market gay sites just as i know some webmasters who are gay that only market straight sites (try saying that when your drunk hehe).

As far as advantages or disadvantages, i dont htink there are many whichever side of the coin you look at, there will always be those gay webmasters who do not want to work with the straight webmasters just as their will always be straight webmasters who do not want to work with gay ones.

In an industry where we are all trying to do the same thing (make money) i cant see why we all just cant get along with one another regardless of age, gender, race, religeon or sexual preference.

    Regards,

    Lee

I agree. I know some gay webmasters that thought since they are gay they would have a breeze making a site work. Their biggest problem was finding traffic that would convert for the niche they went after.

I will work with ANYONE that makes me money

    Haha i agree.

The bottom line that i look at are profits pure and simple, thats why i work online to make money, politics and the rest of the pseudo BS that others play isnt for me if thats how they run their business fine but keep it away from mine.

Ill work with anyone regardless of whether they are a new webmaster or an old timer if they need help thats what i am here for, thats what my job is, to help other webmasters.

    Regards,

    Lee

    Hey Penrod!

I agree with Lee's statements. I know a number of very successful gay market webmasters, and many of them aren't gay. While I do think being gay has it's advantages (in many ways including business LOL) to work this market, is is not a prerequiste.

My favorite example of this is Lisa Turner from Bad Puppy. She is one of the best - and one of the best examples of knowing her stuff without being gay.

The same is true on the flip side. I know a number of gay webmasters who work the straight markets very successfully - Traffic Dude is a great example of that. He and his crew do the gay market well, but they really work straight traffic quite well.

Well there's my two cents on the subject ; )

    Hope all is well!

    My best,
    Gary-Alan

As for me, I am a closeted gay working in a straight porn company. It sucks, but pays my bills.

I tend to disagree with you guys here, I think pushing the niche that you like the most will give you the best results no matter what. I agree that good designers can make any marketing appealing, but when you push a niche that you are really into, it seems you can really get into the mind of the surfer and doing things like writing teaser lines, chosing gallery colours, etc, is just intuition.

I am not trying to discourage straight people from pushing gay sites, you can always make money off any niche but sticking to your own niche is where you make the best money and have the most fun.

    cheers,

    Luke

Hey Luke! You are spot on there...

Knowing, and being a part of, your niche/area give the webmaster a tremendous advantage at being successful.

Penrod - So those webmaster who didn't make it failed because they didn't understand the business, not their market. So gay or straight they would have failed.

hyatla - that sucks. I think many of us at one time or another had to play the closet game at work. And those who never had to, or refused to, I applaud!

Only those who born to a rich family have this kind of freedom, I suppose.

I ran a gay asian site on the side, that's the area I am really familar with. Secretly, I want to run a gay BDSM site. Am I a pervert? :baby:

I think it's all about knowing how to market to a target audience. Gay, Straight, American, Chinese, Old, Young, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of straight people that make more than a good number of gay people in this business marketing gay sites. And vise versa.

it's nice to see you put Chinese as the counterpart of American. :smarmy:

I am Chinese, and I love Americans (Spiritually and physically).

Just an example. I could have said any other nationality and would have worked the same to get my point across.

chilihost, i don't agree. i know a LOT of people who promote what they like, and get so lost in their own personal perversions that they can't market to surfers.

some of my best-selling niches i have no interest in, and one straight niche that is one of my best sellers used to make me uncomfortable to look at. but i read print mags, egroups, and really get to know what people like who are into that niche.

advertising agencies don't only sell for products they like, after all ;-)
