Is your content being sold out from under you?

I was looking at the tons of TRASH I get from my Yahoo Group and I noticed this email from one of them. (dickjohnson • DICK JOHNSON GROUP)

The email was selling the content from sites on a CD. Not just images, but videos also. I personally was thinking about doing this for some content, mainly mine, but damn looks like I was beat to the punch.

With all the people and sites stealing content I thought that everyone might like to check in the group and see if their content might be there. (I found some of BoyJuice content attached to the email that was sent to me offering the CD.)

The yahoo group address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dickjohnson/
    CD offer is http://www.dickmail.org/dickjohnsonm...yeroutlook.htm
    Video Cd Offer is http://www.dickmail.org/dickjohnsonm...yeroutlook.htm

If this can be done, why join any of our sites? Is this something that the almighty Yahoo will sit back and alow?

Thanks for the heads up, andymike!

I just joined to see what was up, and the BoyJuice stuff seems to have been taken off. I didn't see any of our stuff in there but God only knows what is on the CDs he's selling. If anyone has any other info on this I'm sure we'd all like to be kept posted.

I think it's Yahoo's policy that the material on the sites not be copywrited, but I don't think it's enforced. I do notice a lot of the really responsible group mods have notices that the content added only be personal pics and not taken from the internet.

BTW, did I ever ask you about your name? Are we long lost cousins??? LOL! Just kidding, I know we're not. But it did make me wonder for a second. Heh heh!

I would hazzard a guess that 99% of the pictures traded on Yahoo Groups are stolen from somewhere. I doubt very few of the actual content owners are sharing their stuff. And what with software like Webstripper out there just coming in and cleaning out your whole site, what are you to do?

You could report the group in question to Yahoo for copyright infringement, and they would probably shut them down. But at the same time, how much traffic do all of our Yahoo Groups generate for our sites? So, do you want to stir the pot?

Can't you go after the site in question? Or is there no site involved?

If you want to protect your stuff, you could subscribe to:

    http://www.digimarc.com

I used to watermark my images with my URL, but it adds so much time to the process, so I've stopped for the moment.

I'd love to hear what other people are doing on this issue.

    Cheers

I don't mind the images being traded in yahoo groups, but selling them on cd is taking that idea a step to far in my book. Water marking the image is good, but your right, it takes a while to do a set of images. Unless you use 1 of those programs out there that does that for you, but then you never know how it's going to turn out and might have to do it all over again. I’ve thought about the digimarc thing, but I’ve heard that there are programs to remove that from the image. Weather it’s true or not I have no idea.

I actually sent a message to the owner of the group about. Something is telling me that I’m not going to get a response back. (Stranger things have happened )

I think it depends on how you word the message. I was subscribed to a YahooGroup and the other of the group posted some well-known producers pictures to the list.

A couple of days after the pictures came through a restraction e-mail was sent through by the owner of the group. The producer sent him a scathing e-mail saying that in order to avoid further legal action, he needed to send an e-mail through to the list saying that he posted the pictures when he didn't have the copyright to do so, he violated copyright, he was sorry, and I think he had to provide a link to the producer's site.

The e-mail further stated that if the owner of the group didn't comply within 24 hours, then the producer would begin contacting YahooGroups and Hotmail to obtain contact information and they would begin letigation.

It worked. The guy apologize and did everything else he was asked to do.

    Good luck

Update on the guys. The guy finally emailed me back. He's pretty nice and all. Says he likes me wit and wants to keep in touch...?

He says he leases content from providers that allow him to sell the content on CD in yahoo groups. (I don't know anyone that would allow that unless your screwing them real good 4 times daily with a 24k penis.) Who knows, I've been wrong before.

Arles Image Web Page Creator is pretty good at watermarking. I do all my original content, though sometimes just do it in Photoshop as it can be good to vary the density of the watermark according to the image. I know some surfers don't like this, but stuff em :-) It doesn't deter everyone but I reckon it stops about 95% of use.

The other thing I've done is create a 'rubber stamp' type logo. A bit like those circular stamps they used to frank mail with. A big logo in the centre with the © copyright symbol and then the site URL and e-mail address in a circle to form the edge of the circle. If you design it well it can look pretty stylish and is a way of 'branding' the images as part of your site.

    dick johnson

    hi there
I have gotten an e-mail from the group at lest 4 times a week. I'm really suprised that no one has gone after him?
Humm I think it was like 2 or 3 years back Falcon went after yahoo and the groups and won.
With my site now, I try and make it as hard as I can to steal content, but out of a gallery of 100 pic's I leave it so 10 can be down loaded.
In the last 3 months I only got two e-mails wanting to know why. Funny both e-mails told me that it was there right to take what ever content they wanted.
It's not only dick johnson, but what about the thousands of adult check, man check sites that have stolen content on them to?

Content theft is a very important problem. It affects both webmasters and content providers. We do our best to police the net as much as we can, but I always say that our clients are our best police. I mean, why would you want to spend your money on content only to have someone rip you off? We even have a form on our site where people can report a site they suspect of content theft.
