I don't see how that benefits the affiliate :-) It is a traffic leak.

So, just to be clear, are you saying that affiliates get some kind of cut from the toy store ad, Major Hardon, the casino ad, Bear Fur, Speed Up Your PC, and the others?

On the subject of spelling errors I've noticed even Topbucks has got quite careless on that. Unless it is deliberate...

Some sponsors have gone way overboard with promoting their own afilliate links through popups. The worst I have seen recently is one that as soon as someone clicks on your link they get one popup that covers your link with the sponsor's own ref codes, a popunder with 20 or 30 more of their own ref codes, the fake Inbox that spawns timed consoles and if you exit the page 3 to 4 more consoles, none of which you get credit for... all from a hosted gallery!

I refuse to promote sponsors who do this and I tell every one of them why when they send me, "Do you need help sending us traffic?" messages. I will only promote sponors who have a console free option or share with me revenue from any signups they get that they wouldn't have without my traffic. Good traffic is hard to come by and I'll be damned if I am going to just GIVE it to someone who is making more $$$ than me! If more webmasters would do this and stick to it maybe this would become less commonplace with sponsors.

I have debated with several sponsors who engage in this tactic and they think there is nothing wrong with telling webmasters they get credit for all exit sells when in fact they may get credit for links on 1 console if that.

Same here some of the sponsors whether they are small ones or ones that have hundreds of sites just dont seem to grasp the true concept behind using consoles on their tours, they are there primarily to make money and this shouldnt be forgotten however, if the affiliate doesnt make money, they dont make money.

To often do i see consoles popping on entry to a site that are full of links to other websites (not owned by the affiliate program) where webmasters dont make a red cent and it actually pisses me off to no end.

Good traffic is hard to come by and I'll be damned if I am going to just GIVE it to someone who is making more $$$ than me!
Thats a great way to look at things and, one that actually works VERY well.

when in fact they may get credit for links on 1 console if that.
Exactly what i hate about these practises which was actually one of the reasons we only have a single console on Stud Money sites and in addition, we give webmasters credit on all the highly clicked links from our consoles.

I actually think the whole console concept got out of control a year or two ago when it seemed like everyone had at least one paysite of their own and they wanted to put them to use to make them more money because the tours didnt sell the sites, as i said above, the first use of a console is to make money plain and simple but programs shouldnt use these consoles to the point where they dilute not only their own traffic but, that of their affiliates.

With that said, i also beleive sometime in the next month or two we are going to be 'altering' the console we have on SM to give webmasters more ways of making money including something that NO other sponsor has done in the past unfortunately i cant say what it is just yes as we are still beta testing it however, preliminary results are looking very good indeed :groovy:

My main site is a pop-up free zone and I aim to get return traffic, so pop up hell on a sponsor is not an option and even one pop puts me off promoting something.

Some time ago I began tracking all my traffic using the free AXS script which can show the path the visitor takes through the site and off to any external links. My logs show that some people go back and forward from my site to sponsors, sometimes checking out six or seven until they find something they like.

When a sponsor prevents my surfer from getting back to my site -- by tricks with the back button, with multiple windows, or with annoying tactics that may convince the surfer to close all the windows -- thus leaving my site -- he is not only failing to make a sale for me on his site, but he is also denying me 2, 3, 4... click throughs to my other sponsors, one of whom might make me a sale. It is something to think about... That crappy tour might be reducing the conversion rates on your other sponsors too!

What I am saying is that, sometimes, it is incorrect to think in terms of a surfer being a single click off to somewhere else...

Maybe it depends on the type of site you have (my strategy is to offer a quality experience) but my best converting sponsors are always the ones that have the same policy -- no pops, links going offsite or other scams. One of the things I promote earns me an average of 60c a click through one way or another and that is too good to risk losing. Other good sponsors convert at 1:50 to 1:250.

I use server-side-includes and any sponsors that don't make money in a certain length of time are removed from the entire 500 page site by editing one or two text files and ideally replaced with a more-profitable sponsor in a similar niche -- in case someone comes back looking for that original link on the page.

If more people removed links to sponsors that don't convert, instead of building pages and leaving up for ever (a TGP rule in some cases of course) there would be fewer bad sponsors as they wouldn't continue to get all that free traffic for no return.

Amen! Unfortunately the net is well littered with pages from webmasters who gave up after being screwed over and over and new "suckers" come along every day so there will be free traffic for shady sponsors for years to come.

I wonder how many sponsors that use the pop-ups to their own links you don't get credit for actually tweak combining lower converting and less attractive tours for the link you get credit for with much better ones for those links credited to only themselves? That way if someone actually DID manage to buy through your link they'd get a cut but most converted links would be going 100% to them.

Bumping an old thread for page views is imho the same as unsolicted forum spam.

    Thread is being locked.
