Good example, Patti. Not b/cuz you used me as the subject (though that was a nice touch), but b/cuz it is the perfect analogy for what is suspect about the nominations process for MANY awards shows, not just porn awards.
For the AVN and GAYVN Awards, the judges are made up of the publishers, editors and professional reviewers of the movies, because we're seen as people who are experts in what makes a good porn video, and we do have a criteria of "excellence" that we go by when suggesting and/or voting for content.
The Cybersockets are more like the People's Choice Awards in a way. Which some would actually say is a "better" gauge of how successful your site or movie is. If the surfers are the ones voting, then they are voting for their favorite sites, and that belies a certain public consciousness. More like a crude but no less viable gauge of how popular your site is among customers. At least that's the idea behind it, right?
In the end, though, it's really not much of a compliment if I was nominated in a category that did not include those on or above the same level of talent and expertise as myself. It might be good for name recognition for those who pay attention, but in the end, I really couldn't take winning (or being nominated) as any kind of an accurate statement about my talent.
But I'm an attention whore, so I'll take whatever!
