I just realized we havent done one of these threads for a while, so, instead of our regular 'post a tip' threads, i figured we'd go a little more specific this time with a hints and tips thread on SEO (Search Engine Optimization for those of you who may not know what 'seo' means).

Ill start off with this one that actually works really well for us..

Whenever you register a new domain name, make sure you add it to your server right away and put an index page up on it, including keywords in your meta tags, and title tags. Then, head on over to Google and do a search for yourdomainname (without the http:// and .com) then, add .com to the end and click on the 'If the URL is valid, try visiting that web page by clicking on the following link' hyperlink.

You should see your new domain start to get index within a week or two, if not sooner

Okay i know we have a lot of SEO people on GWW so post a tip in here and lets see if we can help everyone get more search engine traffic in the process

Use text navigation and have a link to a site map for the SE spyders to crawl. And text navigation thru CSS is not all that difficult or unpleasing to the eye either... and it is the text that SE loves... not one big huge pic sliced up.

Beautify links like

to be like

http://www.mydomain.com/Anal/Twink

using Apache's mod_rewrite. Some search engines have difficulties with parameters for a webpage.

Oh I know I know...

When picking keywords, make sure you know what your goal is.

If you want to just bring in traffic, look for high traffic attention getting keywords, but if you want to CONVERT traffic, you need to make sure you pick keywords that someone looking for your product (or service) would be thinking about.

For example, if we sold bubble gum and just wanted visitors we could target something like, "hot guys chewing gum," but since we are trying to *sell* gum, it would be a better use of our time to target keywords like, "best bubble gum flavors." Of course, if we were a porn site that had pictures of hot guys chewing gum, the first choice would be better.

Use important keywords in your Title tag. Repeat those keywords in your text (don't overdo it though or Google will knick ya'). Put some keyword laden text as close to the beginning of your body tag as possible.

Work on building up links. Always. Daily.

My tip of the day would be: On the page that links to you, check for the number of outgoing links. If the page has hundreds of links on it, it won't be sending any significant PR contribution your way...
