Personally, I have moved away from them. But I'm sure there are still many who do them. I'm going to post your question in the general forum too.

I'm not a designer.... but I do layout pages. Personally, I stick with a full width of no more than 750 on backgrounds and anything within that for table layouts. My reasoning comes from my stats. One package, from one of our hosting companies, shows the count of webmasters coming in at 800x600 res. That count out numbers higher resolutions (10:1 ratio).

One of our consultants recently purchased a premade template for a non adult project that was set at '1456' width. We literally had to help cut everything back to accomodate their site. While the design was good, the surfer to the site missed half of what was on the site because it ran way off the page. I cut it back to 750 and the change had positive results.
