I did not see this here - now this is just not right. I can understand being conservative but I think he has gone way too far

Internet-oversight group ICANN's Board of Directors, yesterday postponed the vote on the controversial .xxx TLD, which was intended to be reserved for online pornography, by one month. The vote was originally scheduled to take place on August 16.

The fate of the new TLD, which received the green light from ICANN back in June, will now be decided by a vote in ICANN's next meeting on September 15. This delay comes five years after the concept of the new TLD was first proposed. The decision stemmed from opposition to the TLD from the Bush administration and other national governments. Several governments are said to have approached ICANN's Government Advisory Committee (GAC) expressing concerns on the implications of creating the new TLD.

Mr Michael Gallagher, Assistant Secretary at the US Commerce Department, is said to have called on ICANN to ensure that the best interests of the Internet community as a whole are fully considered. He also stated that the department received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails expressing concerns about the impact of pornography on families and children and objecting to setting aside a domain suffix for it.

In a letter to ICANN's Board of Directors, Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, Chairman of GAC, said, "I believe the Board should allow time for additional governmental and public policy concerns to be expressed before reaching a final decision on this TLD".

Not a huge shocker. ICANN dropped the ball previously, and they are doing it again. (I expect many adult web masters are going to throw their hands up in the air while doin the Jig, or the Two-step, because they believe .xxx is a bad thing.)

The thing is - if people would actually think about it, it could actually help prevent children from gaining access to these porn sites. People could very easily block these domains / email addresses

They could block a .com porn site just as easily if they wanted to. There's nothing magical about a .xxx domain. And since it isn't mandatory and since it would only apply to the U.S., there'd still be loads of .com porn out there.

The whole thing is a racket set up by a couple of guys who have never worked in porn, but want to make a quick buck from it.

I agree completely. The only thing .xxx would do is make a bunch of register companies rich beyond belief. Plus I believe it would make the porn industry an even easier target for politicians.

Wasnt the Bush administration originally in favor of the .xxx TLD?

I've never heard anything about them beeing "for" or agaisn't it ... there were some politicians that talked but not the administration as far as I can recall ...

Looks like they are agaisn't it now ... the internet is controlled mostly by the US nowdays :( sad

This issue has been brought to the table many times, over many years (I believe 6 or so now) and is not a ‘get rich quick’ scam. It is the response to the many complaints from concerned parents.

Parents would be able to control what their little lambs view online by simply blocking ALL .xxx , not merely one pornsite.com, at a time (that task would never end).
I still fail to see how this is any different from a .gov, or dot yadda yadda yadda - it is merely putting something in its place.

Hell, I would love to see a .rlg or .cult, where religious content would have to reside - I truly hate stumbling across religious sites, as I am seriously offended by the material. Thusly I could add a rule to my firewall to block all .rlg or .cult!

As for adult sites located at a .com address, that would eventually be a no no - that issue I am sure will be dealt with. I would like to see the controlling body reserve names for the legitimate companies (Example: massivecocks.com massivecocks.xxx) as well waive the registration fee and extending whatever time is remaining. Yes, I know, we would all have to do some work, but to me it would be worth it.

While frequenting a store, or mall; I am glad hookers are not jumping-out at me from the isles, as well that I do not see guys walking through the mall with their recent purchase of a blow-up doll (fuck-toys) and the econo-size tub of KY.

Have people raised such a stink to remove zoning laws (commercial, industrial and residential)? No, because they do not want a refinery and a pizza joint right next to their humble abode.
So, are they simply ignorant (not looking at the entire picture), merely worried about their investment and are not willing to help out, or are they merely hypocrites? Or ‘all of the above’?

Bush is all of a sudden against, when he was previously for it.

Anyway, I also believe that all it will do is make a bunch of register companies rich. I figure they'll ask alot more money for .xxx names.
Not like buying a .com now for $7.00....more like having to pay $70.00 for a .xxx name (Or more - depending)

I do agree: the registrars will most likely profit greatly - I never assumed they would be fair about anything. History shows that our industry is not revered, let alone respected. However, I do feel (and continue to hope) if we try to cooperate or work with the concerned folk, things shall work out for all (yes, with us standing to lose the most amount of monies, but that is not what 'it' is always about).

On the other hand, many do tell me I am a dreamer.
