Whats the deal with 'jokes' and copyright?

For example, lets say i find a couple of funny jokes on another site, what would my position be if i were to utilize them on a site that i owned?

Ive never really thought about something like this before but, im starting work on a couple of new projects in the next week or two and one of them is going to need a rather large archive of gay themed jokes so i just want to know where i stand before trawling the web for gay jokes LOL
