How Long Until DVD Movie Content Becomes A Thing Of The Past?

Im noticing lots and lots of sites in recent months are re-using the same gay and straight dvd movies over and over again on their tours, that got me thinking...

When DVD licensing became all the rage in the industry, every started to jump on the bandwagon with it, to the point that there are now in excess of 10 dvd content providers, most of whom are selling the same titles to the major sponsors.

At what point do you think we are going to see a shift in content away from movies to a new medium because all the movie content available will have become 'stale'?

It cant be that much longer when we start to see it happen, there are afterall, only so many times a surfer can see the same movie repackaged on a different tour.

Your thoughts?

The problem isn't that all porn DVD's have been over-exposed. The problem is that so few gay titles are licensed. And the ones that are licensed are old. What we need is a content provider that is proactive about pursuing studios to license their titles. When Don was still with WWC, they seemed to be more energetic about getting new gay titles. Now it seems like they are complacent again.

I think the real question is... How come the PPV sites are so much more effective at licensing than the content brokers?

Btw, there seems to be thousands of straight titles available but shamefully few gay titles.

Slightly off topic, but how do the studios make their money when they license out a film - is there a trust thing involved between the content provider and the studio for a cut of the sale's ?

BUT, its for high speed connections and up to date computers so not for every country yet. I believe that the gay sponsor who starts offering HD will rule untill everyone else has it and that becomes "stale" too.

Yeah, it totally sucks the way there are hundreds of thousands of straight DVD titles that can be licensed for web use, but only maybe 1000 gay titles. GRRR!!!!

the problem i have with licenseable dvd porn is that a lot of providers don't give it to us at a nice big size - they give it to us at a measly 320x240, and that's just not good enough these days. i want it full sized so i can decide how big it should be for my member area.

Same here.

I spoke to a provider a few weeks ago who only offered them in that size and i just laughed.

I wouldnt even post that size clips on a TGP

I totally agree - im working with with a straight affiliate program who is in the planning stages of moving into the gay market. while they will shoot exclusive content, they still need DVD content for their members area - ive been assembling lists for different gay niches, and its been such a pain in the ass!

I have twinks, general hardcore, black and maybe latin covered... other niches are hard to find quality content, although i know ill pull it off.

I think the problem is competition - the straight market is so crowded and so many of the studios shoot DVD content as if its really for the web. Look at a straight studio like Acid Rain. Their content is released on DVD, PPV and as Webmaster content all at once.

I think someone could make a killing in the gay market doing the same thing, just doing wall-to-wall sex titles in different basic gay niches. Why chi chi larue hasnt done this is beyond me - he has access to so much talent, and the gay performers work much less and make less $$ than straight female performers do. So, im sure they would like the work:$$$: .

A large studio/distributor will primarily want to buy rights for say 10 years for a fixed price, say $10k or $30k a flick. The big studio/distributor will rarely make some "deal" where the content provider receives a cut or royalties. This means a lot of content producers hold onto their flicks in hopes to get them out there on their own, which is hard to do without a studio/distributor.

Why there is a difference between so many straight products making it to market versus gay, I don't know, but it might stem from the higher number of straight productions produced, or a lower number of gay production companies (content providers) who knock out titles on a freelance basis for studios/distributors.

$10k-30k per flick? That certainly can't be the cost to license to a content broker... that's gotta be for all distribution rights.

Yeah, exaclty, for all.

I think it still has a place, but Lee is right, it's hard to get new stuff from distributers. But it's all about keeping up with it. We're pretty lucky as we've been getting good stuff in and I hope we can get more. But I like having a mix of DVD videos and content specific individual scenes, so people have more of a choice.

As far as Xstr8guy's comment... um... no comment. ;)

I think the reason a lot of the production companies don't license their content out is the exclusivity that comes from keeping it on their own sites. At least that would be my guess. If your stuff is being seen everywhere else, it doesn't have the same appeal as it might if it can only be found on your own site. Though that would seem to contradict good marketing (not to mention deter branding opportunities), I bet it has something to do with it.
