does anyone know of a program that will zip the contents of several files into their own zips, ie, I have files named 1 - 100 and I need to get zips 1.zip - 100.zip with each of these having only the contents of the appropriate file (not the filename itself)?

i haven't heared of a ZIP-Application which does that.
WinRAR wil UNzip the contents of many ZIP-Archives to their own directory but not compress many directories to their respective archive.
Luke, you might want to code some *.bat file maybe, or on *NIX machines a small lil shell script

yeah i thought about the bat file option (its for my win PC), was just hoping there was something that did it for me :)
