Gay LinkLists demands... all crazy?

Ok, here's a question...

why do gay link lists and directories demand 50+ free photos for each gallery one submits?

On the "straight" side most of the big ones demand 20-25 at maximum.

Isn't a gallery with 50 pix giving a bit too much away? Plus some go as far to request 100 or even 300 free pics to have you labeled as "golden" or "prefered" (not AVS!)...

They all have this rule from hunkhunter, gaydemon, hunkmen, altagay etc...

I'm sure I'm missing a good point in this rule... so if there are any linklist owners here I'd sure like to hear why is it so?

I run a link list and I can't tell you how much absolute wanking crap I get: over used sponsor content, badly written descriptions by people who can't speak English, among other things. If I accept them, I might get traffic, but then surfers will say, "Oh look at all the wanking crap."

I think a lot of these rules are made just to keep a lot of the crap away. And if you're serious about wanting traffic, then you'll work harder at building a better product. I think 50 pics is a bit much for a free site, an AVS gallery no.

I'm about ready to stop accepting Top Bucks content on my link list. I don't need any more of it and those Russians love it.

When I reviewed sites for JUB 95% was complete and utter shit, pardon my french

And when a new site came out there was 15 webmasters all trying to outdo each other submitting with the same sponsor content. When one of Top Bucks' sites came out there were 7 webmasters in one day using the same content. A couple even used all the available content hoping to get in before everyone does

Green Guy's rules are pretty sensible and I've borrowed them for my own use when reviewing sites.

At least it's entertaining reading the descriptions of some submitters - "guy beating his cock up", "guy slams his cock to cum", "_______ was fucked and he almost dies" :D

I have run a LL and submitted to gay LL's for six years or more.

It's a different best than on the straight side.

Altagay at one time had a 100 pic min and reduced it to 60 (they let 50 slide).

I have a 50 pic minimum, but I am flexible if the pics are not overused and of high quality.

Here's the deal. Straight LL owners are MUCH more stict on how many out going links you can have on a page. MOST gay linlists even let you have a banner above and a text link below every pic.

And MOST webmasters who submit to gay linklists have the crappiest sites, the most overused content, the smallest pics, and just don't get it.

YOU can make sales w/ 50 pics if you get agressive, which you can much more than on the straight side.

IMHO there is no excuse that you can't send at least 80% of the surfers that visit your gay site to a sponsor. On the straight side because of stricter rules, it may be 20%.

BTW, I no longer accept free sponsor content. And in an earlier post I even TRIED to explain why I didn't want just an asian page. Even there you have the same 10 webmasters submiiting the same 10 new sets. 100 NEW sites, but only 10 are really NEW. Ughhhh....

And IF i see another bear site done in PINK I will flip. The first 10 sites were funny, the next 20 were annoying, now it's really annoying.

From 'our' stand point these sites are a good balance between offering a surfer something and us getting what we want back in terms of sales and traffic.

From someone who works a lot in the AEN market, it's one of those old-style sites we put up back in the day. A couple of pictures and a "buy this" script. Not a lot of incentive to sell an AEN membership, which of course is what they want. And from the AEN's perspective, there's a lot of traffic leaks on that page. I'd add some more preview pictures and eliminate some of those leaks.

I Totally agree with you from an AEN point of view.

Here's how we differ though on our thought process Michael.

I'm not here to sell AEN's, sure its how I started (with sitepass waaaaay back) but that's not where my goal is.

My goal is to sell memberships to paysites....Therefore I build these AEN sites that AEN's can have as content for the members they already have and I get advertising space on some of the highest quality linklists out there, after all they pulled out their CC to buy the AEN membership so they'll do it again if they see the right site in the future.

It is interesting though that we still sell a shitload of AEN's across the board with these sites as they are all listed in some way on our network of galleries, LL's, freesites etc but that's just bonus money paying MaxPixels for their content.......

I also want to point out that we always produce sites like this too for the AEN's where we shot exclusive content to fill niches.... Gay Voyeur suff was one that I noticed was lacking in AEN content so I shot some...

Here my goal was to boost all the link list traffic and not promote any paysites on the outside but we take a bigger position inside the content area.

I'm very fair with linklists, AEN's to ensure we ultimately all make money....Hell there's enough of it floating around out there! :)

Been running a LL for 5 years.

I feel you could make a better effort to actually sell GMP.

I know Rob at UGAS would flip if he didn't see some text describing the benefits of UGAS.

Concerning AEN's, they don't really want a ton of galleries with agressive upsells, at least the bigger ones. Their ultimate goal is to get surfers to stay a member of their monthly recurring plan. Everyone that joins your paysite or whatever you sell is a potential customer they lost.

Basically, it's seems you model is leeching of the LL's and AEN LL's, hoping to sell sponsors, and if you make sales to the AVS it's icing on the cake.

I will say it does make money...

I too think 50 pics per page is a bit too much. I appreciate the flexibility with being able to put on more banners... but I work with straight & gay linklists, so I stick to the ones that allow freesites with 20 pics on them (two galleries of 10 pics each). I have a nice submission list now, with a good mixture of gay and regular linklists. You can see it here -

BTW, I try to use sponsor content whenever I can. I think it's the best way to promote a site, by showing what's actually on that site, and not some crappy sets from some content provider. Moreover, if I buy content, who's to say it's not been used before? I've seen some sets from content providers that were all over the place...

That said, after promoting a site for a while, I sometimes ask the program owners to let me use some content from the members area and most agree. That way I get content that's not overexposed, and is still from the paysite itself, making everyone happy :)

I've been doing freesites for a while now, and have found the linklists that send me the most traffic and accept my sites on a regular basis :)

And that's the problem with most AEN galleries -- they look at the AEN hub merely as a traffic grab to sell other things. But you'd better check the fine print of the webmaster terms and conditions and submission rules because while the AEN may approve your gallery, they may not list you in their directories and search engines. So, you won't be getting much traffic anyway unless you're generating the traffic form link list submissions. And if too many webmasters do this, then the AENs just come up with a new rule to prevent it or penalize the action. AEN galleries are a balancing act: keeping the AEN happy and upselling to other sponsors. If you continue to look at the AEN solely as a traffic grab, then they may change the rules of the game or lock you out. They exist to sell their own memberships, not to send traffic to your sponsors, and they'll protect that traffic.

Promoting the AEN is approach that's worked well for me. I almost always sell AEN memberships on new galleries and upsells to secondary sponsors.
