President Bush 'Assasinated'

Held up by a secret service bodyguard in his dying moments after being shot in the stomach, this is President Bush being assassinated.

Surrounded by a crowd of panicking onlookers, the American leader is pictured just seconds after being gunned down by a sniper following an anti-war demonstration.

But rather than a repeat of JFK's shooting or Ronald Reagan's attempted assassination, this shocking image is part of a new Channel Four show.

The dramatic scene, which has caused outrage among Americans, has been created by a British film company for a programme about the effect of the War On Terror.

In Death Of A President, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this month (SEPT)before being shown on Channel 4's satellite channel More4 in October, the assassination is a starting point for a retrospective fictional documentary about what happened next.

This scene, which was created by putting the President's face onto an actor with digital wizardry, shows him being gunned down just hours after driving past an anti-war demonstration while doing a talk in Chicago.

The two hour drama, in which events are 're-created' by the use of footage and interviews, shows the media storm around the War on Terror as Muslims are fingered as the culprits before there is any evidence.

In the wake of the assassination, authorities focus on a Syrian-born man in the search for the culprit.

'In the hunt for the killer, this will show how America has been affected by the War on Terror,' said a spokesman. 'It is about the polarisation of America in all the events post 9/11.'

But the drama, which will be shown on Channel 4 after being screened on More4, has angered some Americans who have seen four presidents assassinated while in office.

Eric Staal of Republicans Abroad in London said last night: 'I wonder if they are celebrating the idea that the president could be assassinated.

'We've seen from early in his presidency the extremes that the political Left are willing to go to vilify him. This takes this vilification to a new and disturbing level.

'It is an appalling way to treat the head of state of another country.'

While a White House spokesman said: 'This does not dignify a comment (sic).'

The film, which Channel 4 describes as 'a thought-provoking critique of contemporary America' has been written and directed by Gabriel Range.

His previous work includes two docudramas for the BBC; The Day Britain Stopped, a fictional documentary on two planes colliding above London and The Man Who Broke Britain about a city trader who causes a national recession.

Death Of A President is not the only way More4 will be exploring the impact of the War on Terror, the channel announced at a launch yesterday.

The Trial of Tony Blair, by the makers of the farce A Very Social Secretary, will take a 'darkly humorous' look at what will happen to the Prime Minister after he leaves office.
Starring Robert Lindsay as Blair, a role which he also took in A Very Social Secretary about David Blunkett's affair with Kimberly Quinn the show will focus, the drama will kick off with his resignation.

The channel said: 'With Iraq still in turmoil and Gordon Brown in Number 10, The Trial of Tony Blair imagines how political events - now beyond his control - may shape both his future and his place in history.'

Other shows will include a real documentary on Iraq starring Saddam Hussein's daughter Raghad and Pamela Stepehenson conducting 'psychological interviews' with the Duchess of York and Stephen Fry.

This is going to be interesting, i heard something on the news today about how everyone was bashing ABC for getting a docu-drama ready about the months leading up to the 9/11 attack.

How cool!

It's a real sign of the world climate we live in when our allies are making movies of the U.S. president being assasinated. And everyone knows it's wishfull thinking, not a dramatic "what if" scenario pondering the effects of terrorism.

To be honest I STILL cannot get my head around the fact that he's still our president or that he was ever elected, let alone re elected.

I'm more amazed that the people seem powerless, or uninterested, in stopping him. But when you live in a world of working 2-3 jobs to survive and have ample movies, games, and internet to distract you, then you can see why the average person doesn't take the time to make their voice heard, or make a change.

He wasn't elected. Al Gore won the popular vote and Republicans stole the election through voter fraud in FL. Ditto Ohio in 2004. The more I've read about irregularities, the more I'm convinced that's what happened.

THIS appalls me more than anything. The American public seems to have somehow become a bunch of ignorant sheep in the past 10 years, basically willing to buy just about anything the media puts forth as truth, and nearly as impotent in the ability to think for themselves and look at the world around them.

It's a pretty ballsy move for a filmmaker to make a film about the assassination of a head of state in another country, but perhaps that is just a show of how much contempt other countries hold for the US.

I share as much contempt for the film as I do for Bush. I think the film is in poor taste and would not spend the time or money to view it. While it may be true people in other countries hold Bush in disdain, let's not forget only 36% or so of Americans approve of him. It makes a strong case to be sure that if you are an American citizen to make sure that you are registered to vote for the general election and that you do vote. We need a house in Congress controlled by the Democrats so there is real oversight of his policies and actions. I still do not understand why a President can be impeached for lying about a blowjob and another President is not for lying about the premises of a war. Rather than assassinating him, he should be impeached.

I was really involved with the impeachbush.org movement but things seem to have stalled.

I agree with you 100% regarding lying over a blowjob vs a premise for war. It's unfortunate that there seems to be a total breakdown over all mechanisms to protect Americans, and the world, from the likes of Bush. Everyone I talk to overseas absolutely love Clinton, and HATE Bush... world view is an interesting animal.

Yes yes Gore did get the popular vote. Republicans stole the election but voter fraud hasn't been the proven culprit. I think it's important to remember the way Bush campaigned churches around the country promising payoffs, which he has since honored http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/fbci/

If it was a Gay president that won, and started dolling out all the governments money to Gay organizations, people would think that's wrong. But when it's religious favoritism, it seems acceptable?

I agree. It's important to remember also the number of immigrants coming into America. They might believe in the American dream but still hold on to their old core values of "what the government says is right" I could be wrong, just trying to figure it all out.

It is unfortunate that people's faith in the country's election system has been destroyed. I assign that as Al Gore's most lasting legacy.

Like any good conspiracy, no amount of corroborating information will ever disprove claims of voter fraud, because conspiracy theories by their nature are unable to be disproven.

Squirt, you often ask why Bush won two elections. There is no single answer, but I can suggest one reason out of many was the alternatives the Democrats presented for the voters. John Kerry was a terribly unappealing candidate whose own loss was amplified by the increases Republicans made in Congress and at the state level (more evidence against the "aha! Ohio Voter Fraud" conspiracy, btw)

Sometimes elections are going to be very close. That is natural. This is routinely reported as a "torn electorate" - but I think that it indicates a healthy competiton of ideas, and a benefit of democracy.
