Life decisions suck

OK I have a dilemma in my life… and I want some opinions

I currently work for a non-profit organization as a tele-fundraiser, constituent relations specialist, double duty basically. I really do enjoy the rewards I get from working there. It is awesome to be able to say that I help people everyday, but I strongly disagree with some of the tactics being forced upon me to raise money. I personally do not like being downright mean and rude to people. Now don’t get me wrong, I can get pissed in my everyday life and be mean, but it is with good reason. My bosses try to force us to do 2 and 3 asks on the phone asking for money. It’s really starting to affect me. I don’t like going there and having to give people rebuttals over and over on the phone practically berating them for money. I was taught at a young age that no means no and to leave it alone, but my bosses seem to disagree. I seriously dread going to work everyday, because I’m afraid of my boss and what she may do to me next… she is a scary Bosnian woman. HAHA. I really would like to try and make changes to their fundraising tactics, but I doubt that is feasible in my current position.

Or, I could quit and go back to my old job at a gay bar I used to work at. I was their lead server for a year and have been told multiple times that I was the best server they have ever had and can have my job back anytime I want it. I just can’t stand the drama that you get wrapped up in. Being there everyday you can’t help but get involved (no matter how hard you try to stay out of it).

Now at both jobs I can sustain my living financially, it’s just more unpredictable from the bar and I always used to hate that, because you never know what you are going to walk home with, but the earning potential is unlimited. Also at the bar it is crazy late hours and I won’t have a life (Friday and Saturday nights are the best nights) I mean it’s not like I have a life now… LOL I work so much. The positive is I can work way less hours at the bar and make the same amount of money.


I would love to be able to just stop working and concentrate on school and my adult industry career right now, but I just need a little more income before this industry can pay all the bills. So, I must punch a clock for a while longer

Anyway, I just needed to get this off my chest… hopefully I can get some feedback as to what some of you think I should do…

Either one doesn't sound very fun, how about a 3rd alternative? Find another gig entirely; retail gig, receptionist, office gig?

It sounds like you are experiencing the trials and tribulations of telemarketing. If you are required to ask each prospect for money three times, then you are going to receive three potential rejections. I can see how that gets very old quickly.

When you work in sales, dealing with rejection is a part of the job. However cold calling and telemarketing are always difficult, which is why there is a very high burn out rate. If you did well at the bar, and you were able to actually save your cash tips, maybe you should reconsider that.

Life decisions do suck sometimes, however its very hard for anyone here to actually give you the correct option. We arn't in your shoes.

What i will say is, make sure whatever you do is what you want. When you have big choices to make, those moments when you think somebody is weird for sitting stairing into space in deep thought actually start to make sense ;)

Maybe an option is to go back to your old boss at the bar, and ask for like one night work just to test the waters. If they really want you back in sure they would be happy to. If you get that, you can get a better idea of what you want to stick with.

And when it comes to drama, walk away. Trust me its the best thing to do 99% of the time. Getting involved actually helps nobody in my opinion.

bars/clubs are fun to visit but i wouldn't want to work in them! (retired cockwaiter/barback/bartender) besides from what i'm seeing most are closing with changing "social-attitudes" and most recently some of the "no smoking" laws.

i would suggest "networking" with a couple of companies in here for a position/work close to you and/or you could completly change your surroundings by relocating to another area.

Seriously, find a new job. You spend alot of time at work. If your not happy there dont stay there.

Do what you enjoy doing, whatever it is. Look at those of us here on the GWW board.. for the most part I don't think there's anyone here who doesn't like what they're doing... in spite of long hours and other frustrations. Loving what you do makes all the difference.

Life decisions do suck. That's why I avoid making them entirely and rely instead on horoscopes and a gaggle of ind. contractor tarot card readers to make them all for me.

But seriously... (or was I being serious?!)

One of the wonderful things about being young is that you don't have to stress too much just yet.

I'm NOT saying the issues and decisions facing young people are trivial in the least.

But I am saying that many answers will come along on their own, and you're also in a position to be able to adapt and adjust quite quickly and, relatively, easily.

I recently interviewed a candidate for a position we're filling here who was in their late 50's, recently laid off from a government job, caring for a family of 5, and having to make - at that stage in his life - major career changes. Not an envious position!

I think that at your age you're best served appreciating even difficulties as learning experiences that will set you up so well later in life. Keep your wits about ya and stay open to learning from what you're going through and you'll find that, regardless of what you're doing several years from now, you'll be so much better off and enjoying yourself thoroughly.

I used to work in management for a nonprofit involved in holistic cancer treatment. We had strong issues with American Cancer Society simply *because* they were so crass about fundraising... not to mention their very negative attitude on anything other than their "party line" about what works for treatment.

In general, the large nonprofits are no different than businesses and tend to work their staff members very hard. Unless you really like selling/begging for money, it probably isn't the right job for you. On the other hand, a bar full of drunk people isn't exactly a healthy environment either.

I don't think Skyler had the intention of using this thread for this purpose at all - and he'll probably yell at me for it -- but I'll be crass and put a shameless plug in here and say SEND SKYLER TRAFFIC!! He directly profits from his site, and it's our goal for it to be his full-time gig to pay his way through school.

We just put up a bunch of nice hosted video galleries (4-30 sec clips at 500K) and traffic has been building quite a bit since then... so any of you guys that have traffic, I know Skyler will be happy to do interviews, fansigns, and we have a new lil something we're going to be announcing pretty soon that I think will be fun too :)

Well a thank you to all of you for your valuable opinions. Unfortunately I am still stuck here regardless. I would love to make the adult industry my main income but unfortunately it just hasn’t happened yet. (And, thank you chip for your shameless plug… LOL)

So many of you have made mention of doing what I love… unfortunately I can’t do that in the here and now. I am currently going to school to learn and do what I love in the future, but right now it’s all about the most money for the least hours possible to pay the bills. I am in school 25 hours a week and working anywhere from 20-60 hours a week on top of that… so basically I don’t sleep. I think I failed to mention that I am COMPLETELY independent. I’m not your typical model in this industry, I’m not a spoiled little princess, nor do I work in the industry to prove a point to anyone. I work to pay the bills… period… no matter what type of work it is. I pay for my entire living, insurance, food, school, gas, bills, car, etc… I am getting no help from my parents, yet they make too much money for me to have been able to get grants from the government… cool huh? Funny how even though my parents don’t give me a damn thing and I am independent yet I still have to use my parents’ income when I file my FAFSA.

I really can’t leave this area b/c of school… I don’t graduate until the end of April… so until then I am stuck here in Michigan.

When in comes to staying at the ACS I have decided (thanks to everyone’s strong suggestions) to leave. (It’s just a matter of how quickly I will be able to) I realize that is something I need to do for so many reasons; I kind of just wanted reassurance that leaving would be the right thing. Now, I just need to line up a new job… hopefully I can still get one at the bar… time to pick up the phone and swallow my pride. I didn’t leave on bad terms but left with the intentions of not going back and everyone knew that.

Maybe I can find something totally new in the near future… I really don’t know, but I do know that I need a change. The only problem is my school schedule is VERY strict and does not change… nor do I get breaks… I go year round. So, it has to be a flexible job, and things like restaurant serving and retail require evenings and that’s when I am in school. (mon-fri 5pm-10pm) So, it’s proven to be very difficult to support myself.

Well… again thank you to everyone and thanks for letting me vent once again… I’m beat so I’m off to bed….

I worked a full time job, went to college full time, year around and managed two websites and 8 people, I made it! It builds character!

Find something you like and if not you have to pay your dues till you can get what you want in life, takes time, skills and experience. Be patient it will all come together in time, keep chucking away at it.

agreed! , it does take work ("bed-hoping" may not be substituted for work!) it takes a great deal of patience (you may throw things on ocassion but "never" , "never" , no matter how mad you get hit "delete!") and most important belief in yourself. (regardless of how many people own a camera..err..try to bring you down!) :fool:
