PHPBB Is actually riddled with security flaws and pretty much has been since the day it was launched :(
Thats actually the main reason that i swapped out all of our webmaster forums to VBulletin, i think there has been about 4 security updates to VBulletin since we've been using it and every time they send an email they tell us what the actual vunerabilities are so we can judge whether to run the upgrade immediately or, wait a week or two until they release their next version of the software.
I beleive its also possible to use WordPress in VBulletin now too :)
