Cell-phone porn could be delayed

For anyone in talks with Amp'd mobile some possible bad news

Amp'd Mobile's filing for protection from bankruptcy on June 1 may have one unexpected side effect: a delay in the introduction of sex-oriented cell-phone programming.

No mobile carrier, including Amp'd Mobile, directly offers sexually oriented videos or still nude imagery. Amp'd Mobile let subscribers download pictures of fully clothed pornography stars and models.

But Amp'd Mobile had discussed the possibility of offering racier fare in a meeting with industry analysts in March, according to Jupiter Research analyst Neil Strother.

While Amp'd, based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., declined to comment on the bankruptcy filing, analysts believed that the company would be more cautious in proceeding for fear of alienating subscribers while it worked though its financial difficulties.

Cell phone porn has already failed in the U.S, at least at the present time.

Over the last few years several large key players in the adult industry have been trying vigorously to get their content and concepts in to the cell phone marketplace on a variety of carriers to little or no avail, including some based outside the USA.

I spoke with 4 companies at the Phoenix Forum this year, all of whom were heavily involved in touting cell phone porn and all of them told me they were leaving that market segment because it just wasnt a viable option, even portable porn such as iPod content was something they no longer had faith in in some instances.

That being said, i beleive the reason it failed is because it was realized far to soon, given that the cell phone market in the U.S is inferior when compared to the rest of the world because the average cell phone user isnt 'cell savvy'.

Incidently, Amp'd has been fighting chapter 11 for a few months now, i remember seeing something a month or two back where they explained the market share they wanted to penetrate, the lower paid urban market, just didnt want their services.

The new iPhone (AT&T) allows access to ALL internet sites, so maybe other carriers will follow suit.

What is the putative scenario for viewing cell phone porn ? It could well be that I just don't "get it". But I don't see someone dialing up a f*ck vid while sitting on the subway next to some random chick.

So who are the customers ?
