Wlmart to start selling only Blu-Ray DVD's

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- National discount retailer Wal-Mart announced Friday that it had decided to only sell Sony's Blu-ray hi-definition movie discs, and will phase out Toshiba's competing HD-DVD formatted discs over the next several months.

Wal-Mart said that by June, its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores would sell only Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray hardware players. Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD format are not compatible.

"We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's Senior Vice President of Home Entertainment in a statement. source

What are your thoughts? Is this the final nail in the coffin for HD DVD?

I just read that inside sources at Toshiba have said an announcement will be made "soon" that they are going to discontinue HD-DVD and start making blu-ray players.

Unfortunate for the people who bought HD-DVD players and even more unfortunate for the replicators who tooled up to manufacture HD-DVDs, but it's good that this format war didn't last very long.

wow, that totally sucks! it costs tons of money to get the machine to encode to blu-ray, and i see their entire format as complete greed because of this.
