LOS ANGELES - "American Idol" contestant David Hernandez once entertained audiences by removing his clothes instead of singing tunes, a manager at a male strip club in Phoenix told The Associated Press.

The 24-year-old finalist from Glendale, Ariz., once worked as a stripper at Dick's Cabaret, appearing fully nude and performing lap dances for the club's "mostly male" clientele, club manager Gordy Bryan said Monday.

"He had the look and the type that people like, so he made pretty good money here," Bryan said.

It's not clear whether a history as a stripper could disqualify Hernandez from the competition. In 2003, finalist Frenchie Davis was dismissed because of her appearance on an adult Web site; but last year, Antonella Barba remained in the competition after racy photos of her surfaced on the Internet.

Fox spokeswomen Jill Hudson did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment Monday.

Why is it that we've got to constantly play that "HA HA GOTCHA!!!" game every time it turns out that someone on some reality show actually isn't some uptight loser who's never been naked outside the shower with the lights off and the bathroom door bolted?

Who freaking cares if he was a stripper?

Without people who were willing to get naked, we'd all be out of a job, let's stop acting like it's something to be ashamed of and rally around them as someone who's cool enough to put themselves out there.

Yet again someone gets a bit of notariety and their previous employers have to grab some of the limelight to (in the process potentially fucking it up for their ex-employee).

I just dont get it.

Ha! You're preaching to the choir. I think it's great he was a Gay stripper and is now a finalist on American Idol. I think it shows the general public a new face on the stereotype of what being a Gay man is (minus the nude stripping and Gay bar association ) though I don't know if he's out as being Gay. I don't watch American Idol.

I think it's pretty obvious who cares; the network, the general population of America and who they consider appropriate to be "an American Idol", the fans who pay to vote every show, etc. etc.

I personally think it's great. People tend to try and box in everyone to fit a narrow stereotype of who/what they are. People are dynamic. We do and are many things to many people. $0.02

I don't think we know he's gay? I've known straight guys that worked at gay clubs just to make better money. They weren't strippers, though. But whatever.

But either way he's not likely going to win so in the end it's probably kind of moot. This desire in society to step over or knock people down a peg does get old, though.

I think one of the reports said he's had a boyfriend for three years, based on several "witness" sightings of seeing them together in Phoenix.

I like what I saw on The View today and read in several articles. Basically IT'S A NON ISSUE.
