Giving the surfer the idea that the site is actually an 'exclusive' club with a waiting list to get access.
I wonder how well this works and if there is a way it could be used to market to adult surfers?

I don't know...most porn surfers are a instant gratification lot. having to wait to see some porn?
You would need the ultimate teasers to get folks to do that I would think, especially since theres so much out there now.$0.02
I'm not sure how many would believe there's a restriction. I smell a method of screening memberships that isn't as glaring as saying "we'll let you know if we approve your application".

hehe....i doubt it. If a surfer can't join your site instantly they will just move on to one of the many many others available.
This marketing technique and layout is great to get signups for a porn newsletter. Getting people's email addresses (targeted traffic) can be great for any business, to promote to them by email your different websites or products you're offering. If you had a nice short video clip of your best content right above the sign up message, I think it would work out well.
