Weird Email - Sort Of....

Just had someone send me an email about our http://www.stophivaids.com domain that i registered last year.

Basically, the person who sent it said they were a charity that owned http://www.stophivaids.org and that if we didnt pass the domain name over to them, they would go out of business.

Im kind of wondering what you folks would do in this instance, obviously, being an AIDs organization i want to make sure they stick around but, at the same time, i want to create an information site on this domain for myself and also put some links up to things like home HIV tests and the likes.

What would you do in this instance, work out a deal to let the charity have my domain name or, tell them what my plans are for the domain and say im not interested in parting with it?

Well, their request isn't truly legitimate, in the sense that they already have a .org that suits their status.

But, you gotta have a soft spot for their cause.

I'd offer to sell it to them at a pretty reasonable price - few hundred maybe?

Right, that was actually my first reaction when reading the email, which to be fair was only 2 lines of text LOL

Im actually not sure if i want to give up the domain, apart from the fact i want to have an info site that i can use and send traffic to myself, i actually think its a pretty good domain name that could have potential 'business' usage in the future if i wanted to use it that way.

At the same time, the whole 'its an AIDs charity' thing is at the back of my mind too, if it were a business and not a charity id pretty much tell them to go jump without second thought but, it isnt.

for me the .org domain is not reachable.. maybe they go out of business anyways?

Any credibility of the domain and "information" is lost the moment you make it a potential 'business' and "send traffic to myself"

Well im not going to lie, i dont register domain names that arent going to benefit my business in some way, the original plan for this one was to use it on the Condom Cash sites as a way of showing our support in the community when it comes to HIV/AIDs related issues... I guess you could call that a business reason as it would be potential 'good will' marketing, showing that we as a company are concious about safe sex issues and doing our part in trying to better educate people about the issues.

As for AIDs not being a way to make money, id agree with you if it wasnt for the fact that pharmaceutical companies make billions a year off the disease, it is unfortunately a sign of the times when illnesses are ways to make money and whilst im not considering any way to financially benefit directly from this website, it would certainly be something we would utilize to garner support from actually doing something to educate individuals about HIV/AIDs.

Anything that porn based businesses can to do to show they are more than just people with no morals or ethics selling 'sex' is a good thing imho unfortunately for the most part, we cant openly give donations to charities in our companies names because we work in the porn industry so we must do what we can on our own to help out and assist where we can.

Even if one person read the information we're planning on using on that site and they chose not to bareback but use protection because of that information, or purchased a home HIV testing kit to make sure they werent positive before choosing to bareback, i personally think that is a good thing, whatever my reasoning behind putting the site up may or may not have been $0.02

At the end of the day, any way you can educate those who may be considering barebacking for the first time, or assist individuals to make informed choices when it comes to unprotected sex, to me is more important than 'profiting' from the site, but that doesnt mean that there wont be some sort of indirect profiting from it, the same way many large corporations have their own 'charities' they garner brand awareness, good will from owning them, they arent doing it entirely out of the kindess of their own hearts.

the first thing i'd do is check to make sure they're a real and active charity. if so, i'd go from there - after all, you could put up a link to them on your site or send them exit traffic, or rather you could if they had an active site. as it is, seems like it's almost a moot point if they don't even have a wordpress blog up.

you might suggest to them they could do that, btw.
