Is This Possible And If So How?

Im wanting to setup some sub domain aliases on a specific domain name, so for example, if a surfer typed in somthing.domain.com they would be taken to an index.php page based on a template.

I can work that first part out no problem as its just adding some stuff to .htaccess however...

What i would also like to do when this template page is shown, is to take the subdomain part of the domain url and parse that in to the page itself so for example, id have a text link such as...

Welcome to this subdomain site.

Which is someone typed in fluff.domain.com would change to...

Welcome to this fluff site.

Does anyone know how i would go about acheiving this please? Im hoping its just something simple like parsing some data from the referrer url in to a php string that i can hard-code in to my page template.

look in the $_SERVER array or in phpinfo() for the correct value of $_SERVER
