FSC Slams dot xxx

A California-based trade body for the porn industry has come out against the proposal to launch a .xxx internet domain. The Free Speech Coalition's executive director, Diane Duke, has written to ICANN to complain that the company behind .xxx, Florida-based ICM Registry, is not part of the adult entertainment industry and does not have its support.

ICANN ultimately controls what top-level domains are used on the internet. It approved .xxx in 2005 then changed its mind and rejected it in 2007. The .xxx idea was recently given a new lease of life when an independent review panel said that the 2007 rejection broke ICANN's own rules. The FSC has been against the proposal all the way. It's worried that governments will use .xxx's existence to mandate its use. It also doesn't like the governing body, the International Foundation for Online Responsibility, which ICM set up to create policy on how .xxx domains would be used. The FSC says IFFOR is balanced against the adult industry's interests.
