Is it just a market that exists mostly as untapped potential? Are straight women gettin' off to porn that's made for straight and gay men?

with a growing population of single and divorced women, women already making up the majority of the population, women earning their own money, and the sexual woman taboo (i.e. women should not be horny but instead just make babies) gradually goin away (gradually because it's still pretty much on the whole not really thought of that women are independent and sexual beings on a level as men) what's up with it?

We talked about this abit when I first started posting here, in fact it's how I managed to drag a few women over here to post! Basically, yes, it's an untapped market. Some smart sponsors are realizing this and are building solo male sites that don't say "gay", and thereby can market to both women and men equally.

There isn't a whole lot of content out there that is geared to women though, and a number of us have been asking for content providers to get the word out to the photographers that there ARE webmasters wanting content that is more suitable for the female audience. Right now we're stuck with buying sets that we end up using maybe half or less of the pics because they're unsuitable.

For solos, if a picture or pose smaks of "gay", it gets cut. They want sexy looking "straight" men that are stripping for them ... think along the lines of what women get by going to a male strip club and you have the idea of what I mean.

In basic terms, women aren't wanting to see couples sex where all the focus is on the man. Cock sucking and cum facials in particular aren't desirable for women's porn. Longer "warm ups", slower undressing, cuddling, real kissing, with the focus more on the man giving her pleasure is what's needed. More sensual and romantic staging overall, tighter shots, effective lighting, candles, etc... as well as the sets that satisfy "fantasy sex", ie sex with the UPS man, the plumber, etc. For most women it isn't the sex act itself that's the turn on, but the mental fantasy and foreplay.

I also feel strongly that a site for women has to have a sense of community, and "extras" that would provide entertainment as well as intellectual gratification. News, current topics for women both in business and as a housewife, horoscopes, recipe of the week, helpful tips for dating, forums, polls, a frank and honest sex question and answer area, products that are of high quality, ie sex toys and sexy clothing. Honest and well written articles dealing with women's health issues and sexual issues.

Basically a huge interactive magazine for women that also has nude pics and movies.

Of course, in the last couple of weeks I've encountered women with incredibly varied sexual tastes, and they've demanded I stop making such sweeping generalisations about what women like. You can't please everyone. In general, though, if you want to cater to the average woman who just wants a bit of titillation, I think those rules work well.

In any case, here's what I posted at FW:

I've been making porn for women sites for 4 years. I'm now part owner of the paysite For The Girls. According to Nielsen Netratings the market is 30% of all porn surfers.

At the moment a lot of straight women are surfing standard websites looking to get off. A lot of standard websites don't even acknowledge their presence. Everything in mainstream porn is aimed at men. Some will settle for what's there, many more are keeping the money in their pocket. Not because they won't buy, but because they want something that is worth their money.

Something made FOR them.

I'm sure there are people who have tried their hand at marketing to women and have failed dismally, perhaps because they haven't understood who they were marketing to, and done the research. A lot of people assume that you can whack up any old gay photos and women will instantly get out the CC. It's not the case. I'm a firm believer in using the right language to get women on your side, to reassure them and get them hot.

I'm currently talking to Brittany Andrews who is an interesting female porn star and director. She said "Women are not a "niche", we're a gender!" And in a way, that's so true. You do need to make changes in the way you market, if you want to target women.

i once did a project for someone that involved a lot of research into what women want from porn and sex. i went through magazines, online chats and polls, books, etc. it surely wasn't the porn i see online - where most people get naked asap and there's no kissing, no plot and plenty of cumshots. it was the exact opposite.

even if women are only a small market, a site that really caters to female tastes would make money 'cause i've only seen a couple. even the ones that sort of do are making do with content shot for men - and mostly shot for the photographers, not even for the average guy.

Well, I've been doing a LOT of research, and have picked up several domain names in the hopes of getting something together for this soon. Hard part has been assembling good content, if you have any resources to share for pics, movies, stories, articles, etc. I'd be appreciative!

I want to post this here, it's related but not really. But I'm going ahead because it illustrates the huge gaps in the marketplace.

For years I worked in a bricks and mortar video store in Toronto's gay village. In this neighbourhood there were a couple of places to get porn: our place or the other place down the street and downstairs where they had video booths and the place always smelled real bad. (Ooops. I guess that puts me there, eh?)

The regular video store rented regular movies to anyone and everyone, but they had a back area where you could also get porn. The store carried mostly gay movies, but had a fair bit of straight stuff, some bi, trannie, lesbian.

Working there, I was always frustrated when women would ask for my help in finding lesbian porn. I'd have to take them off to the section that we had with the box covers with "lesbians" on them. You know: long hair, nylons, long finger nails, high heel shoes, yeah sure, lesbians.

I was always careful to explain to the women that this was pretty much all that was available for us to buy. I would educate them about the prohibitive system we have in Ontario, where each movie needs to be submitted and approved by the Film Review Board. This process is cost-prohibitive to the makers of real lesbian porn who can't afford to pay the submission fees just to get their film reviewed. I wanted to be sure the women realized that it was the government and not the video store that was preventing them from getting their kind of porn.

We had a number of women (lesbians included) who used to come in and rent gay porn.

Lesbian porn online is merely the two woman to one guy fantasy. What seems to be missing is the love... the romance... same thing missing from for women/couples porn. I would venture to say that alot of gay men would say its missing from their porn.
