Was just having one of my random thoughts about the state of the industry and protecting minors getting access to pornographic images etc and it struck me that while building some free sites today, every one of them had a warning page on them yet, yesterday when i built a couple of galleries, the general consesus seems to be that warning pages arent needed.
Anyone know WHY this is the case? To be honest i have no idea myself.

Aren't warning pages completely worthless? Otherwise shouldn't we be using 'NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW' on all of pages that aren't warning pages?
I think the rationale about gallery pages is that the gallery is already protected by the TGP's warning.
Until there is true age checking, warning pages are a complete joke. What horny 16yr old isn't going to click through a warning page? C'mon!
But isnt the warning page more to protect the webmaster from prosicution or at least to allow him / her to say "Look your honor I warned them" yeah if anything a warning page is an enticement not a deterant

And if you really care that much about warning people, shouldn't there be some kind of a Javascript pop-up on every page, so that traffic coming through the back door of your site from search engines is also warned?
I think the only true solution is to ghettoize all adult sites in a xxx domain and require them to be there and no where else. Then it would be easier for parents to lock out their kids.
Of course, it would also make it easier for ISPs and search engines to lock us out, too, but ...

Interesting post Lee, I was going to post something yesterday after talking to Luke yesterday, but ran out of time. You see most avs sites with some form of word warning but the graphics used on the page itself are often graphic enough, free sites and TGP seems to be both without and with. My question yesterday was how important is it for a pay site ?

After all, you can remove the xxx, but there are still bomb recipes, cults and a host of other things kids shouldn't be seeing. The common element every time this argument comes up is that kids need to be looked after - whether at the park, school, riding their bike etc - the internet is no different.
there was a thread here about something like this a few weeks ago ... some new browser for kids.
dmoz manages a hand edited directory of thousands of sites - surely disney, network solutions and microsoft between them can create a safe internet for kids with manually approved sites that leaves us all alone!
why are we still having the argument about how to filter OUT undesirable content, when all that has to be done is filtering IN suitable content?
Yeah warning pages are useless - my sites all have ratings on them - including the galleries - Any good filter software blocks the site -
Yeah lets do away with porn and make all the kids do like I had to do and look at the underware section of a Sears catalog or swipe my dads playboys -
there is a school of thought, that since galleries are (generally) only linked to from sites where they are already viewing porn, that a warning page isn't needed. It's not like someone is going to type in http://www.gallerydomain.com/galleries/john/01/ and if they do, then they are clearly knowing what they are going to see.
There are the SEs that link to galleries, also, but a clearly written (not misleading) title tag could also serve as some sort of 'warning' as to what they'll see if they click the link.
about the xxx domains... that would put us out of business... think of how many isps that would simply block that tld to make themselves look good. A .kids or similar is really the best solution, then us parent's could simply set filters that allow only .kids domains to show up.
Okay just to clarify, my point wasnt about whether warning pages are of any use or not, my personal and professional views are that every little helps to show due diligence on our part however, why is it accepted that free sites, avs sites, link lists, TGP's, paysites etc need a warning page when a simple TGP gallery doesnt?
At the end of the day, are they not all showing the same thing ultimately? Free porn.

the lawyers i've talked to all felt that unless you had a VERY porn-friendly judge, warning pages are pretty much useless.
i gather that the lawrence walters "type in your name and birthdate" version might have more value.
since no tgp will post any page but a direct link to the gallery itself, there's not much point in a bunch of warning pages.
In my opinion the answer as to why TGP galleries don't have a warning page is that they are directly linked from the TGP site, where you pass a warning page (in most cases) and generally speaking those galleries aren't accessible any other way, hence the lack of requirement for a warning page.
As to the validity of a warning page, rather have one than not.
