Will "Peer to Peer" transfers every be eliminated?

I decided to see what was going on in the bit torrent world this afternoon since it has been so long since I had done so. Went to torrentspy.com and put in the word "gay" and I couldn't believe how many gay movies came back.

I'm not talking just one scene, but the ENTIRE movie! Now I know there has been some crackdown on bit torrents & other peer to peer operations, but there are still a slug of them. And if the "average" surfer is getting better educated on how these work, are we, as webmasters, at real risk of losing a lot of signups to these types of operations? I mean, if they can get them FREE or enuf porn to satisfy their desires for free, why pay money for a membership?

Any thoughts on this?

Peer-to-peer or any other illegal type of "sharing" copyrighted material will probably never go away. As hard as the companies try to implement new types of protection of digital media, these crackers/pirates or whatever you call them will eventually crack them....

This is not the case only with torrents, but for example, take digital television; in U.K. you have SKY that is letting new and new protections every year and crackers still manage to crack them...

Or take a look at membership sites; you can use any new protection script, or almost impossible user/pass combination and they will get cracked...

I have to admit I also downloaded many divx movies from once well sharing system Kazaa, just because DVD's were fucking expensive, and now you can get lots of good bargains, the prices are well down (at least here) and I buy them regulary...

So I guess, trying to make those sorts of sharing go away is not the option, you have to think "Why are people doing this? The price?" Yes, I'd say so...

Why buy a membership if you're interested in only 2 movies at that site, when you can easily download them...

I mean, the whole industry will have to re-think their payment options, pricing and ofcourse the whole package... I'm sure people are willing to buy!


OH and another thing - for example I want to pay access to a certian gay site, I take my Mastercard out and try to signup, unfortunatly IT DOES NOT GO THROUGH, not because it's empty, but because I'm from the "WRONG COUNTRY".... So... hmmm... what do I do?? Simply go to a certain pass forum and try to get it there for free... Which I've done several times, because unfortunatly that STUPID CCBILL is not allowing me to signup or in fact they have quite a few countries on their non-default list.... I say "If you don't treat me as a possible member, then fuck you, I'll get around that easily" And it's a shame, but that's the way it is.

I think that generally most people who use peer-to-peer to download movies (porn or otherwise) would never intend to buy anything in the first place. I know I used to use it to download movies because I got pissed at spending $10 on a movie that sucked, so I'd download it to see if it was any good before shelling out the money. Same thing with music. I'd download an album and if I liked it, I'd buy it otherwise it went to the recycle bin. As for porn, I still have yet to find a site I would even consider shelling out hard earned cash for, especially with so much legal free porn available. Does peer-to-peer have that much of an effect on porn? Yes, but probably not as much as one would think. Another way to look at it would be how to use it to your advantage. Would getting a highly searched for & hard to find gay porn movie onto the network with a big fat watermark with your site address on it possibly get you extra traffic? It got me to rent Out of Athens from the porn video store!

Which brings up another question: Does anyone see any value in letting any of your pics/videos get out on the p2p networks with your watermark on it? I mean for the advertising alone.....just a thought.

Asking if peer-to-peer networks will ever be eliminated is just like asking if cash transactions will ever be eliminated to avoid defrauding the IRS. The answer, is no.

Well, I think it did a good job in your case as you said you've yet to find a site you would subscribe too since you get it free already.

ya..I know several folks that are doing that now with mixed results.
Sometimes what happens is someone sees that and says "Hey, you got OTHER stuff from this guy's/gal's site?" Then stuff that former or current members got ends up being posted there for downloading.

Ok..then let me re-word it:

Will peer to peer sharing reduce the # of signups we get, stay the same, or eventually it will lose it's appeal and more signups will come our way?

Absolutely :)

Oh and not only with watermarking, DRM, being as widespread as it is presently is an excellent medium which will garner sales if you utilize it correctly on P2P networks.

So far as watermarking goes, i think the secret to that is making sure your watermark stands out moreso than the movie itself, for example, make the movie low quality but your watermark high quality, only send out around 15-20 second clips to the P2P networks and, encode a console in the movie towards the end also ;)

Yes that's a good way to advertise i think.

DRM does not offer total protection against P2P sharing of the materials. All it takes is one person to use video screen capture software and it spreads totally unprotected. There is one major site who uses DRM, yet everything they put out is on P2P without DRM protection. Then to add insult to injury, the newly encoded files are the same quality yet smaller filesize since the illegal encoders are more up on the latest encoding technologies than the average industry paysite encoder is. So go figure that one out.

Overall P2P is more of a threat to the adult DVD industry than the paysite side. Compared to ripped DVD's, there's not a ton of made-for-internet content on P2P. That stuff is just too low quality when you've got 750mb DVD rips all around it. Some of these encoders even do 4.7gb DVD img files to burn right to your DVDR disc's.

This should all be a hint to the adult industry just as it was the music industry. They saw the demand for this sort of thing and stuff like the iPod and iTunes came out of it. Now we need to see paysites offering these huge DVD rips since P2P has absolutely proved the market is there for it.

Not a bad idea. If I could just download a DVD and burn it myself without having to make a trip to the adult video store, and in the privacy of my own home, that would be great. It would definately be worth paying for a service like that. It would be like iTunes but to download full length xxx videos instead... nice! :extat:

Hopefully someday the ability to purchase, download and burn full length porn dvd's will be a mainstream thing, dvd burners already are. But what I think would be really awesome, would be a "choose your own porn" site, where they have tons of "scenes" in every niche, and you choose the scenes that sound hot to you, download them, and burn the dvd.

I would bet that custom downloadable porn dvds, with only the scenes the buyer wants, would do very, very well.

sounds like a good idea to rip and download dvds but i think id b easier 2 share them with other people. maybe if they have some sort of protection on it or something like that.
