"In a stunning legal decision, the United Kingdom’s highest court has ruled that explicit adult videos cannot be sold over the Internet.

Further, high court justices said Monday that the videos cannot be sold through mail order or by phone. The court said the aim of the law was to stop the material from falling into the hands of children.

The court ruled that all “R18” films and videos must be sold in person in licensed sex shops. The R18 certificate represents a grade given by the British Board of Film Classification on its explicit nature "

I was always under the impression that R18 movies could only be sold in licensed sex shops in the UK anyway.

From what i recall, there are no companies that actually ship R18 movies (or R21) movies directly from the UK, most of them get shipped from other countries in the EU.

It may also interest you to know that many lawyers in the UK, when it comes to online pornography, tell their clients to stick to the standards set out by the BBFC when it comes to defining what is and, what isnt legal from an obscenity stand point :)

Seems it's not too hard for UK-based companies to just set up shop in another EU country and ship all their stuff from there, as Lee mentioned.
The EU being so open a community that facilitates businesses operating from country to country so well.
A company like Eurocreme, for example. Their DreamBoy line is what put them on the map - a UK video line with UK models and UK production, most movies shot almost entirely in the UK and promoted and branded as a UK creation... operating out of The Netherlands when it comes to video sales and distribution.

The UK has always been uptight when it comes to porn and I was just reading about age of consent and found something very interesting. This sentence kind of summed it up for me.

"Until the reign of Queen Victoria, gay sex was punishable by death."

That was not too long ago. Maybe things aren't so bad here in the u.s. afterall.
