Is anyone in Bangkok now?

Just as an addition to what Suki just mentioned as to the 'legal hassles' of Thailand, I would tell anyone thinking to do business here to use EXTREME discretion and caution.

First of all, porn is illegal in Thailand. There was an English webmaster that lived here about 3 years ago. He placed an ad in one of the local gay mags that he was looking for porn models, left his phone number and address, and guess who showed up at his door? He ended up having to pay a huge fine to the Thai government to avoid jail time, and got lucky to just be deported back to his country with a 'blacklisted from Thailand' stamp in his passport.

There was a case even more recently of one of a local gay magazine owned by a foreigner called 'Thai Guys.' It didn't even feature any porn, just some guys in underwear, but the government deemed it pornographic anyways and raided their office. Some 'child porn' was found on the owner's computer, and he was blacklisted from the country and deported as well, being forced to leave his lover of 10+ years.

Gay Porn Webmaster event in Thailand? You can count me out.

Yes I agree with you and If we are going to do a get together then it should be in a safe zone for everyone.

Well Roy i have to tell you that you have been given a very much over simplified and glossed over opinion on creating porn content in asia....anywhere.

First of all, it is illegal to shoot porn in any asian country. Straight or gay.

Secondly, the Police forces are not the same as you and I are used to seeing in the USA. The forces in asian countries are set up in the same structure, true, but every district, every jurisdiction, and every agency has their own levels of enforcement and enforcers. Yes, you can pay off one guy to look the other way, but you may not be able to pay off or even know who the other guys are that can over ride his payoff and bust you anyway. And the officer that took the payoff......we'll that never happened now did it.....

Thirdly, to produce porn here takes a very secure, discreet network of people to produce porn of any type in any asian country. It takes sometimes years to garner the trust of people that you can work with to do this line of work. It takes years before you can comfortably rely on the trust you have with the network of people you setup. You see, the penalties for a foreigner are a fine...hefty that it is....and deportation.....for the locals, it's a trip to the Bangkok prison system which would make a man on death row in America think he was in a 5 star hotel.

Producing porn in asia is not for the light hearted. it's very very dangerous, and many who think they can just swoop in and start shooting will get busted in relatively short order and be out of business.

so you can pay "pop-a-son" all you want, but that still won't protect you over here. Gay Asain content is by far the hardest content to come by with any consistency and quality and those of us that produce or are involved in production of it, are very very cautious about what we do....and build our support networks slowly, and still exercise extreme caution and constantly look over our shoulder to protect our backsides.

As such, I agree with Suki and DannyZ, a gay porn webmaster meeting in Bangkok would be a horrible idea. A gathering for the fun of it, where business might be discussed could be fun, but it could never be an organized industry gathering. None of us that work here would ever attend.

Unfortunately I don't think that would be a very good 'safe zone' either. Hong Kong is a part of China now, which means Internet porn is illegal there too. In fact a friend of mine just had his Hong Kong server shut down because he was hosting porn on it. I really can't think of anywhere in Asia where porn is legal, although maybe Greg can shed some light on the situation in the Phillipines?

That said, I certainly would not mind flying to Europe to meet with a bunch of Webmasters in the Asian niche. Such an even could be widely publicized if it took place in, say, Prague or Sweden or even London.

Otherwise, the best way to meet Webmasters in Asia IMHO is through private, discreet and informal affairs.

As for the Philippines, porn is illegal to produce it, but not to work on it so as an outsourcing company in the Philippines we can legally work on porn as in design, submissions, cartoons etc.

So the porn biz in the Philippines is a grey area, unless your producing or doing live shows which is illegal and carries very heavy penalties for doing this.

I still don't think it's wise to broadcast an event and it's location if we don't need to, but setting up a meeting within our network would be totally safe.

Providing we all just do a meeting and no one strays to shoot content, then I don't see an issues doing it in the Philippines - last thing I would want is that we meet and someone shoots content and gets caught, that would not be good for any of us.

My idea would be for us to hook up for dinner and beers after and keep it a casual meet where we can all talk.

Back from my trip to Laos and Bangkok. As usual, I am more relaxed than my normal frenetic HK pace.
