Video Editing - Capturing Video at the Highest Quality...?

ok an update...one of my friends transferred one of these [dark] videos onto his laptop, and guess what? It looked PERFECTLY FINE!!! Perfect lighting and perfect clarity. So it must just be MY LCD monitor.

I've had problems before with monitors displaying a darker than usual image, so i can't believe i didn't think about that at the very start. DUHH!!

I have yet to try and adjust the settings on my monitor, but it can't possibly be anything else.

Anyways, thanks for all the great feedback, guys.

What I wonder is this… Do you think the way I have that page worded is confusing? The reason I asked is because we do serve up the proper codec from our server. The link to it is just a couple of words to the right of where you clicked to the developers site.

My intentions were this..
Since new surfers are so paranoid about downloading anything right off the bat from an adult site for fear of the viruses they’ve hear so much about. And with the bad publicity that’s associated with adult, and downloading an EXE file. I just simply don’t want the surfer to freak out, at least that’s my intentions.

Also, the reason I put the link to the developers site on the page is so that any surfer new or old has the opportunity to go and read about the codec before they load it on there machines. I’m trying to show my honesty to the surfer, and make them feel confortible about what he/she is getting ready to load by giving them the choice of either loaded the codec from the developers site, or our own.

What are your thought’s on this?

(The download freak out part)
You had the right idea, it's just the developer's page is even more confusing.
And since the porn surfer has the attention span of the gnat, I fear they would be off and gone.
I understand you are going for quality/small file size, but the simple fact is 100% of Windows computers have media player installed.
We can argue about the "rightness" of that all day, but it's there, and the surfer don't care.

Maybe the demos should be at least in some easily usable format and then a "and if you are interested, we can give you much higher quality over here by doing this........

Give that a try perhaps?

Well see, this is just my thought’s, and I do REALLY appreciate your input on this subject…
What I’m thinking is this. See, I don’t really care for porn surfers that much. There use to getting a free ride out here with all the free porn online. My targeted audience is the person who actually likes to frequent strip clubs and watch strippers. They’re a little older usually, and more the Voyeur type males and females, and couples. Plus I get a lot of the younger girls who what to learn. See to me porn surfer’s are what I refer to as Lookie Lou’s. The Lookie Lou’s who are even half way interested though, will sign up regardless because of the uniqueness of the content.

Now the ones we cater to seem to hang on for years after they’ve signed up, and got comfortable with the fact where going to be here. Plus my ole lady takes the time to talk to them. First they’ll do a month, or maybe 3, just to make sure we actually update every week. They’ll do that a time or two, and talk to the ole lady about who knows what, then they’ll go for the yearly. We have several folks who have been with us 5 years plus now, and a good batch of them who’s been with us 2 to 3 years. There just a different crowd I think. They’re surfing the porn sites, but they have to be plucked out a few at a time I guess.

Now on this video thing, we seem to get allot of people who will cuss Bill Gates and the windows operating system even though they use it. (go figure on that one) But they will download an after market viewer just because they can. ( I guess) …But anyway they’ll download Real Player, Winamp, BS, or some other free player just because they feel better about it…
(Again, I guess) I do some of the after market players have allot bells and whistles they seem to like. I’m fine with regular Windows player as a default player. But I do know the videos seem to look and play better in the BS player for example. (So who knows on that one)

Now we use to use the Real Player format when we started putting videos out in 2000, in fact I still have a couple hundred RP files in the members area now. But……. What happened was this. RP use to be a free download… It might still be, honestly I haven’t even looked in awhile. (And I liked RP by the way, and this isn’t an attack on them… But!
What RP decided to do a few years ago (02-03 I think, its been awhile) Anyway, what they did was write a nifty lil script into the free version of their player. What it did was this…. The surfer launches their RP to watch a video file. RP used a pop up a window that says HEY! Get the Latest and Greatest version of the FREE RP Now…
So, the surfer goes after it thinking it’s a good deal.
BUT, guess what… RP didn’t bother to tell the surfer that once they’ve loaded the new LAG-RP that it would time out 14 days later, and they lose all ability to play ANY videos with it!
(Yep, nifty lil up sale tactic towards a paid version though)
But, MY GOD the problems that caused us were Unbelievable! We had people writing telling us the videos didn’t work anymore. We also had new sign-ups telling us they were able to view the videos in the free area, but not in the members area. Needless to say they thought we were ripping them off. I ended up making different form letters (which I hate with a passion) but did it anyway because the questions as to what had happened were all down the same line.

Well, I said to myself then. I said self, you ain’t NEVER going through that again. So I went on the hunt for a codec that covers the most possible players. Small files, good quality, flexibility, etc. “And, most importantly I wanted to be able to dish it out as a free download from our server to the surfers” So, that’s where the Xvid codec came into play. It covers Windows, and Mac OS’s and a ton of the free, and paid versions of different video players.
And, I’m also looking at it this way. If a surfer hasn’t got the time, or doesn’t have the know how to load a free 600k codec, I don’t really have the time to fool with that surfer either.

Now, here’s the deal the way I see it. If I don’t have a link to the developers site (confusing or not) so that surfer can go see for themselves that what I’m offering to dish out is on the legit. Then to them, I’m no different than any of the fly by night operator they’ve heard horror story’s about from the media, who try to load something on there machine that ends up being a virus or something even worse. (does that make sense?)

Well I have an affiliate that just mentioned something similar to this a month or so ago. He asked if I would consider running a separate section for broad band users, which are much larger file sizes obviously. Right now the largest files I’m running are just over 100mb for our monthly features, and then a few hundred 20 to 50mb files for our members only.
Now this IS something I’m thinking about, but I’m not real keen on the idea because I know the larger files can be pulled off and edited into DVD’s by not so honest parties. And see, what I intend to do is offer a full line of our own DVD products on the sites early this fall.

…See my wife and I just got out of the club business last fall (04) So these last few months we’ve “just finally” been able to get out here and see what’s going on, and focus more on our websites. I’m hoping to go into this coming season with things hooked up the way we planned in the beginning. Now I’m not one to make excuses. But being in the clubs at night, collecting content, dealing with the girls, burning and filing content, model releases etc, just runs you to death. The hours over the last few years have just been totally ridiculous.

So anyway, my question would be this… Do you think that by offering the surfer that higher quality that he or she might think they were already seeing the best quality you had to offer, and then steer clear of buying the DVD’s? (The reduced quality I’m showing obviously isn’t a good example of the digital quality I have.)

In the nutshell… My intentions are to show the surfer the lower quality samples. Then get them to sign up for a membership. Then I give them the Shock an Aww treatment once they’ve joined and actually seen how much video we have. Then, show them samples of the different types of shows we offer on our own line of DVD’s. Then up sell them to the purchase of the DVD’s.

I had to put a motor in one of our little cars, then I had to shoot in southern IN last week, then I had to turn right around this past weekend and shoot the nudist camp. Plus were redoing the sites, and still unpacking boxes of stuff that we forgot we even had while this is going on.

No, I think you're on the right track.
As far as players, windows media is free, will always be free, and is installed in 100% of the current operating windows systems shipped.
It's just there, and it works.

Plus, the basic media server software is free, so most people use it and are comfortable.

There is a real media player you can keep for free, but they do make it easier to download the "time-out" one you mention.

But windows media, is free and pre-installed.
they click on a windows media file, and it just plays.
no downloads, no installs, etc.

as for the DVDs, no, I think you will still sell those.
People want the easy ability to put it on their TV when they want.
If anything, I think your online sales will boost your DVD sales.
It doesn't make "logical" sense, but it does make "human nature" sense.

Well I sure appreciate your time, and your input. I’ve been kind of sandbagging out here (so to speak) and laying low for quite a awhile really. I’ve never really tried to promote our sites, or take on affiliates. I think I’m looking at the affiliates issue a little different than some also. (of course this is really another subject) But I only want affiliates to want to promote our sites. I can’t see myself spamming these boards with the hype about the hottest new program since the pocket on a shirt, all the hype about conversions and yada, yada. Experience so far tells me that surfers don’t just whip out a credit card and pay right away. They lurk for awhile, ask a few questions to see if they get a response to make sure there’s someone manning the ship. Oh I’ve had some spur of the moment sales, but there not as common as I’ve seen some folks put it.
(I know I’m still drifting off here)

I did want to mention something else here. Since I’m going to start putting new DVD’s on the site regularly this fall. Obviously I want to play the largest crowd possible. I thought that what I would do is put the sleeve covers in a table, and then “try” to write up a little text about the shows, run time etc. Then also offer the surfer a chance to load a short clip of the show. I am going to use the Windows format, Quicktime, and the Xvid/vidX files as well. That will be a good chance for me test the players again and see just what viewer the surfers are using most widely on our sites.

Again, I do appreciate your time and input on my project. This is something that I have a ton of time and enjoyment in. Not to mention trial and error! Bawhahaa!

No problems here at all. As a sponsor it’s just a friendly way to network with other people as far as I’m concerned. Sometimes the conversation goes off the beaten trail. Now If I was to just start a thread and just say Hey! here I am with all the bells and whistles yada, yada. Then I'm just like other folks doing the same, and I'm not like other folks.
I'm like this on this on the whole Internet deal though. If I’m not able to meet people for some friendly conversation, then I'm not interested in doing business with them either. It takes a lot of time in the saddle and friendly conversation to gain the trust of the people.
