As someone gay who grew up reading science fiction novels, I think it's a great idea, there's a huge market for it and you should totally do it man!
Interestingly my favorite Sci-Fi writer as a kid was 'grandmaster' of science fiction Robert A. Heinlein. I recently read that many people speculate now that he was gay. He lived a very private life, apparently never had a girlfriend and there were plenty of subtle clues in his stories. Unfortunately he lived in a time where he was probably forced to conceal or not act on those urges and may have used his writing as a form of therapy.
Anyways...good luck on that and do it, do it, do it!
