In defense of Americans, a large reason this "insensitivity" attitude exists is because we live in such a gigantic place. If you live in, for example, Dallas.... you are hundreds and hundreds of miles from the nearest international border....and Texas is a "border state!"
Compare that to living in Hamburg. Out of necessity, you'll just be a stone's throw from the Danes, and the Dutch, who both have their own languages and distinct histories. To most Americans, we are so far from things like that.
Plus the fact that we are used to having the world market bombarded onto us, because this is the first place to go if you want to sell things.
People here have trouble thinking in the other direction, because we essentially do not have to drive in reverse very often.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
