Euro Traffic!?!?

BritishTwinks is right on. And this thread is highlighting one of the problems with a lot of American companies: there's the US and everything else. And you can't think of the rest of the world or even a whole continent of people as everything else.

You've got emerging economies in the former eastern Bloc that are still trying to figure everything out and recover economically. You've got the anything-goes Dutch. You 've got the Brits who tend not to use Google as much as Yahoo. You've got fair-haired Scandinavians and dark-haired, olive-skinned Mediterraneans. And I don't know the percentage but a good portion of the French population is actually Muslim. And Germany has some pretty strict age verification laws. And you're dealing with populations who use credit cards, others only use bank cards, others can't afford to use either, and much of the continent is still using dial-up.

There's a lot to think about and it's not just as simple as saying, "it's just porn." If you're going to Internext make sure you talk to some of the international companies there, you'll get a fresh perspective.

we get plenty of sales from europe without any special targeting - and also a lot from japan. unless you're planning to translate your member areas into several languages, you'll find that most sites appeal to people in all countries who are interested in your content.

when advertising on sites like google, i generally limit my countries to us, uk, canada, japan, germany and maybe a few scandanavian countries. but from avs traffic, search engine listings and gallery traffic, we see people from every country join - and hopefully enjoy - pretty much all the sites i've worked on.

Good observation here.

I've done well at selling to Europe. For me I look at it as a fun challenge. Kelly, the thing is that you have to put things on your site that Europeans will want. It's sometimes difficult for Americans to see this, but that is hot and selling in California is not the same thing people in Switzerland want.

For example, if you look at the GAYvn award nominations, you will see a pretty representative collection of products by and for Americans. The rest of the world is elbowed onto one single "Foreign" category. Don't do this... and this is the kind of things people in other countries see as typical self-important Americanism.

If you want to taget non-US sales you should spend a little extra time honing your bait for these particular fish.

I figure a good way to get some Brits on my site is to promote some of Eurocreme's Bikerboy/Skaterboy/Beachboy movies. Looking for more Europeans, I've profiled a number of the Czech models popular today. What about some French? I've added some JDC.

Remember in the movie Victor/Victora how the shows in Paris were tasteful and extravagent, and then they would go to Chicago and the shows would be all-tits and vulgar?? European sensibilities really get into directors like Kristian Bjorn or Lucas Kazan.... which can be a lot more "arty."

Now if you have a personality driven site, I can think of some things. I notice on the Yahoo fan groups that there are plenty of non-US people on there. If you want to draw and keep some Germans on your site, then do a little outreach. Say not just "Welcome" on your front page, but also "Willkommen!"

That is just one example of a way to make your non-US visitors feel more important. If they feel bequem (German for comfortable), they are more likely to stay, spend their money and return.

Steve is right,

in the eye of Europeans Americans are self-centered. I know this is not quite true to ALL Americans, but to "Americans" in general. Europe has far more cultures and languages to cover than whole South- and Northamerican continent combined have.

You will need to reach out to those different people and make sure they find what they are looking for (e.g. language specific keywords).

I am more than happy to translate text for y'all into German :)

yeah, but unless you plan to have a german member area, having a german tour seems like a cheat to me. i mean, here's this site - i can read every word on it - until i pay money. that doesn't seem fair.

btw, germany has always been one of our best-selling countries on our english tours, so i suppose they aren't that unhappy with them.

most of the webmasters i work with are from europe - finland, iceland, czech republic, amsterdam, france, etc - and they make tours that look like the tours most u.s. webmasters make and they like those tours. they feel they would sell well to their countrymen.

In defense of Americans, a large reason this "insensitivity" attitude exists is because we live in such a gigantic place. If you live in, for example, Dallas.... you are hundreds and hundreds of miles from the nearest international border....and Texas is a "border state!"

Compare that to living in Hamburg. Out of necessity, you'll just be a stone's throw from the Danes, and the Dutch, who both have their own languages and distinct histories. To most Americans, we are so far from things like that.
Plus the fact that we are used to having the world market bombarded onto us, because this is the first place to go if you want to sell things.

People here have trouble thinking in the other direction, because we essentially do not have to drive in reverse very often.
