A lot of demons disappear when you shed light on them, and sometimes fear is that way too. I initially felt my heart in my throat when I first found out that I was being audited, but then I looked over my return and realized I had disclosed everything and prepared it properly so I would be fine.
I have had to spend time in jail and that took away the boogie man there too--jail was not death nor was it the end of the world. It was just a really crappy motel. I didnt bother anybody and nobody bothered me. I sure as hell dont want to ever go back to jail, but I am not afraid of it either.

I don't suggest going to jail to reduce anxiety about getting taken away :-)
but it does work.
However! For anyone facing potential jail -- if you drink and drive on a regular basis for example [like I did a long time ago] it is a good idea to have the phone number of a bail bondsman. And maybe a lawyer. Bondsman first. Lawyer second. We are good for some things ;-)
Wait, don't call me though. I would be much better keeping you out of jail than getting you out. Big difference.

You where a district attorney, and went to jail for a DWI am guessing? Would that not have caused, a conflict of interest, at some point? Don’t feel bad I went to jail in TX when I first got my car, for smashing mail boxes, and eat and running at Denny’s with my friends. My mom had to come down to get me out she was so pissed, I could not use my car for like 6 months. :angry:

Yep. That was one time I was in jail. I had been to jail several times, but that arrest and conviction was the last.
Upon my conviction, I resigned and ran for re-election. I figured that if I was elected to fight crime, and I had been convicted, then the people that elected me should decide if they want me to keep doing my job. Overwhelmingly, they did, and I won every precinct and 70% of the vote in the special election.

I think my criminal history made me a better prosecutor. I admitted my guilt and I went to jail for it, then I did my time on probation and paid my fines. I could say to the defense attorneys "I admitted my guilt and paid the price. I think your client can do the same" and I had no problem sending people to jail because I had been there myself. I figured I was no better and no less than anyone else, and none of the defendants that came before the court were any better or any less than me when I was a defendant. I did not tolerate someone who could not conform to the terms of their probation, and I had no sympathy for someone that thought they just could not spend time in jail. If I could pay my dues, then I felt I had more authority to require others to pay the penalty just like I had to do. I tried to treat everyone fairly and equally, to enforce the law and mete out punishment but not treat people like animals. I think that being a defendant made me a better prosecutor.

God man, I am just glad you where not the prosecutor in any of my cases, I think I might still be in jail. :) one time I had a possession of marijuana, and a really green prosecutor “was a girl” she started screaming at me in front of the judge, and trying to accusing me of delivery of a controlled substance with out any charges, or really evidence at all . If you know me by now, I would think you could see where this was going LOL Of course I starts to fight right back with her, saying stuff like, “if you had a case you would have charged me with it”, she said “if it was up to her she would have”, then I came back with “thank god you don’t make the decisions then hu” her face got so red, and my attorney told me to shut up “with his hands that is” I can still remember the smile on the judges face to this day :D

Nope, never been probed by the friendly folks at the Revenue Services!

I pay ALL my taxes and I declare nothing, with the exception of RRSPs.

You think its easier to get by with out them crawling up your ass in Canada, in the US I don’t think anything scares people as much as the IRS, I am just glad Clinton helped that out a bit, they were so much worse than they are now. I really miss Clinton, I think he was the best president in my life time :thumbsup:

No prosecutor should engage in such verbal exchange with a defendant. She was obviously inexperienced and insecure. I usually would defer the defense attorney because it was not proper to speak directly to the defendant, and definitely not proper to acuse you of something or raise voices in the courtroom. The judge saw this too. If a defendant had gotten out of control in my courtroom, he would have been promptly cuffed and put into a jail cell. That sounds mean, but remember that in my courtroom, no prosecutor would have baited you like she did.
I did have a defendant screaming that he was going to kill me as he was taken away, but I don't think he is eligible for parole until 2018..........

Ya man, I think I was like practice for her or something, I mean it was not a real trial or anything, this was in TX, but the judge had already told my attorney what they were going to do “2 years probation” I have nerve had that happen before to me. I remember my attorney said it was some kinda legal thing that I can not really remember, that allowed her to “question” me in this type of proceeding. It was really surreal like on TV or something, I think I handled it really good considering, I was even kind proud of myself in a weird way “my attorney thought it was funny as hell to, he’s why I knew she was so green” I really did not scream at her, well I did raise my voice after like the 3 question, but never as loud as her. I bet she still hates me to this day. BTW what did the guy do that you sent away for like what I would guess is 50 years with eligible for parole in 2018? :signhere:

He was operating an industrial-sized meth lab with a small arsenal of light duty assault weapons. So, he had to go~

That really sounds like Oklahoma :) I don’t know what it is about meth & assault weapons, but they sure do go together. I can really see how the Vid would push that guy over the edge, I really just don’t think I could be a prosecutor for a living, all that drama every day would get to me, just like I could not work for child protective service, I would end up taking all that home with me. As it is now I have visions of conversion rations, traffic, and porn in my head at night, I think it would turn me into a non caring emotional zombie.

I realized it sounds kind of shitty that I brought that video up at a guy's sentencing, but there was a real reason behind it, and not just to piss off the defendant. Well, I did want to piss him off a little too, but there was a good reason for it.
He and his wife taped themselves having sex and using meth. I don't know how this guy stayed hard but he did... anyway, the video showed them using the stuff, they talked about how much they enjoyed it [he even said it "makes the synapses in my brain go all over the place" ] and I used it to support my argument that this drug they were making was something that invaded all aspects of the lives of the users--in this case, the users were also the manufacturers but it did demonstrate how the drug could be so pervasive. I could have done without the video and still gotten the sentence I was asking for, but I wanted to make a point.

Sorry took so long, I was getting something to eat, ya I fully understand man, I know you are just doing your job its cool :), one hand that would be a really cool job, I do love to argue, but not sure I could deal with some of the people crying on my. I just really did not like the light hatred nature most of the attorneys had when I went to court, they would joke around with each other talk about their golf games ECT while I was going though the most stressfully moment of my life, I just wish some of the could be a bit more professional, at least in the court room, before the trial./case

I have a tax preparer (who happens to be a CPA) and the best benefit of him is that I can call him any time during the year and ask detailed questions about my specific situation, and he can give me good answers. I don't have to explain my whole business or situation to him every time since he's already up to speed... plus, since they're usually "easy" questions for him, we're on the phone for 10 minutes and he doesn't charge me for the time, which is cool. (I do pay him for his time for the preparation of the returns each year, and for our big sit-down end-of-year review meeting, of course.)

I don't doubt that H&R can do a good job preparing the returns, but me being able to call my guy makes all the difference for me.
